Mtx thunder 1500dx problem

I have an older thunder 1500dx, by far not too sexy but i know it can hit like anything! i have one problem.... i hooked it all up and it powers up fine, but when i connected the speaker wires from my driver, it produces a continuous, really loud tone that i'm sure would have blown the sub if i didn't immediately disconnect it. i am a hands-on type of guy and don't mind digging around in the amp, could you tell me what might be wrong and how to fix it? or at least find me a diagram of the guts? i really want this to get up and running, thanks in advance.........Trey

my whole system works fine with my other amp, it's just the thunder that's not working correctly. the link you gave me is for a head unit, that's not my problem, but were you implying that i should follow those instructions on my amp? i suddenly can't find my camera, but hopefully it, or another will turn up soon and i'll send you a few pictures of the insides.

i think the deck is fine, it works fine with my other amp, but the rca jacks are held in by a plastic frame. is that a bad thing? thanks for sticking with this by the way

wow, good call. that's exactly whats broken. is there an easy solution for this? if not, is there a slightly less easy solution for this?

beautiful, i'm assuming the other end of that wire is soldered to the board? just to be sure, the broken jack will cause that problem, and this should solve it, correct? thanks a ton for the help man

Go to the following page and follow the instructions to check the shield ground on the head unit.

Temporary Shield Ground Repair

If the shield ground is OK, you may have a broken shield ground connection on the amp.

I'm not familiar with this amp so I would need at least one good photo of the insides to offer any specifics. You can email it to me if you can provide a high resolution image.

The link was provided so you could check you head unit to eliminate it as one possible cause for the noise.

Does the amp have plastic or metal framed RCA jacks (looking at it from inside the amp)?

  • Perry Babin May 23, 2008

The plastic jacks break off just above the board. If you GENTLY push back on it, you can see the broken connection. The following photo shows the connection.

You can replace the broken leg as shown above. You'll need to remove the entire jack to do this. Let me know if you have any questions.

A broken shield ground connection on either the amp or the head unit will cause this. That's why I wanted you to check your head unit earlier. The wire will go into the hole where the broken leg is now. It will replace the leg.

Read through the following page (particularly what's in the yellow box - VERY important). Do not take the warnings lightly. For example, not having the transistors clamped in place when power is applied can cause catastrophic failure of the amp.
