I had no problems till I changed to vista. My xp still processes my pictures well. The danged vista causes them to be tiled and the tiles are out of placement. Or they will be half and ugly green color and half correct. Or they can be a dark blue or they can have half or 3/4 gray with only some top protiong of the picture actually developed. That **** vista program does it to both my cameras. Both continue to work well with xp.

My camera turns on but it cannot take picture, I don't know why? the last time I took a picture the screen just went black and now it just been like that .

A CCD problem would explain the lines on your pictures and the lines on the LCD (since the CCD is used to feed the live image). CCD (Charge Coupled Device) is one of the two main types of image sensors used in digital cameras.

When a picture is taken, the CCD is struck by light coming through the camera's lens. Each of the thousands or millions of tiny pixels that make up the CCD convert this light into electrons. The number of electrons, usually described as the pixel's accumulated charge, is measured, then converted to a digital value. This last step occurs outside the CCD, in a camera component called an analog-to-digital converter.

Some symptoms of a defective CCD include distorted images or abnormal colors, scratchy purple lines, blank or black pictures, and/or black videos with good sound being recorded on the camera's flash card.

In order to correct this issue, the repair facility needs to replace the CCD. This is not something you may do on your own; check this article for additional details: Bad CCDs. This, isn't a good new, but hope helps to solve it.

Hope this helps; also keep in mind that your feedback is important and I'll appreciate your time and consideration if you leave some testimonial comment about this answer.

Thank you for using Fixya, and have a nice day.

When I turn the camera onto camera and movie mode, the screen displays completely black, even when I tried taking the picture, the picture still came out black.

The CCD - charge couple device is bad. This is a light sensitive IC that is located directly through the lens. It is not processing the light. To replace this part requires precise desoldering and soldering because of the tiny size. It would be difficult to replace. Get an estimate before you have it fixed.

Videos are now a small picture and when expanded are POOR quality

It seems that you have reduced the resolution of the vedio capturing format. In format settings change it to maximum avaialbe resolution such as 1024x900, etc ( maximum among available). Also for increasing the still photo resolution, select the maximum mega pixel such as 3.2/5/etc.. Usually the mega pixels can be changed using any short cut keys.

Sony Cybershot DSC-S500 bad photo resolution problem

Electronic shutter in lens mechanism got bad and you need to replace complete lens assembly of DSC-S500 camera.
Of course new lens assembly would cost more then camera worth so best option is to buy new camera.

Are you in night mode? Sounds like you are in a high gain setting, like ISO 3200 or night mode.

Fuzzy, cloudy pictures

As basic as it sounds, is the lens dirty? The tiny surfaces of digital cameras' lenses really affect image quality. Also check the image quality setting to ensure you're shooting at a high quality setting.

Picture quality has become terrible

Ed, The shutter on your camera has become stuck open. This causes the lines across your pictures. If you take the camera outside or shoot in bright lighting conditions the pictures will come out over exposed. The fix for this problem requires complete disassembly of the camera to access the shutter assembly inside the lens. It is a fairly common issue due to the fact that the shutter is such a delicate component. Check with your manufacturer for warranty support or recalls. If they are unable to help you for free, there are repair providers which you can find online who will repair your camera for a reasonable rate. David Millier Advance Camera Repair
