I've just installed windows 7 and i have no chat box

You have no chat box when you start the application?  If the application is running, then you may need to check the task manager on the taskbar and see if it is minimized to it.  You can click the triangle that is pointing upwards to see if the yahoo messenger icon appears in there: I have attached a picture.
If it is not in there and you have started the application running, check to see if the application shows up on the taskbar.  If it does but you see no window, it may be being drawn off screen.  In this case, (shift+ "right click") the yahoo messenger icon on the taskbar and select "move".  Your mouse will turn into a directional symbol and you can use the keyboard arrow keys to move the window around.  Try to move it around and see if it appears on screen.

My whole taskbar is not visible

If you move the mouse pointer to the very bottom of the screen, the taskbar should pop up as it does when you press the Windows Button, but without Start. If you want to keep it up, right click on the taskbar and select "Properties" In the new window, "Unselect" "Autohide" and the taskbar will stay up.

Windows media player will not open onto desktop, but goes straight to the bottom toolbar and sits while playing a CD. I can't get into the program to make any changes or corrections or help.

Start up the media player, right click on the taskbar, scroll up to toolbars, uncheck windows media player. It will pop up to full screen. Now when you minimize it, it will be clickable like a minimized browser window.
