You could check to see if the pump is still operating. If it fails, the fan will still continue to blow air into the house but since the pad is not receiving any water, it will only blow outside air into the house. It is just a plug in replacement fix and very easy to do. A new pump should cost only about thirty dollars or so.
With the cooler running, check to see if the pad is wet . if it is dry, it's a pretty sure bet that the pump is your problem.

We purchased a swamp cooler 4 years ago. The first couple of years it worked great. Now for some reason we can not get cold air coming trough. We can't find the manual for the machine. It is a Mastercool swamp cooler and was pretty expensive. I know if properly operated it should cool the house within 10 min. We need to run this all summer. My brother in law says we dont know how to operate the thermostate. ? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

The pads you need are at least 8 inches thick. If you have the contractor model, then the pads will be 12 inches thick.
Find a distributor in your town that sells cooler parts, if they dont have them, some of the big home improvement stores carry the pads for your cooler.
Make sure you are using a bleedoff or a dump pump to eliminate the hard water out of the cooler. If you keep those pads clean, they wiil last for many years.

I have an older downdraft mastercool unit. The pads have a groove on one end. Which way do I install the pads? Groove top or bottom? In or out? Thank you, Rich

groove down and toward the inside of the unit, the groove is made to fit the long drain tray it sits on so the pad dries when not it use

Water pump size and over saturated pads

Louis, The cooling does not come from the volume of water running over the pads. It cools by cooling the air passing through the wet pads. So, Yours is an impeccably logical argument that leads to a false conclusion. Bigger is not better in this caThe fishy smell is from the matting (pads) when kept saturated, Molds and algae will form if there is too much water also.. Best you get the original size pump Good luck and stay cool - Ned

New Mastercool pads smell bad

The cellulose pads in a mastercool are glued together and usually the adhesive is what you smell. It may take a while for it to go away. Strange as it may seem, as the pads get more mineralization and you use it more the smell will go away. Do not use a cooler for your whole house without plenty of exhaust through a window or an updux. Coolers work best when there is plenty of freely moving air.

Summer

If it was not drained for winter, do so and then remove all scale from the pan, pump inlet screen, etc. Replace the pads if they are scaled up and remove any scale from the louvered panels. WITH THE POWER OFF, check the belt for cracking and check to drive motor and blower wheel bearings for smooth operation, oil bearings with oil ports. With clean water in the sump, a good drive belt, clean pump screen and clean pads, the unit is ready to power up and run test the float action/shut-off, water distribution through the arms, belt tension (just enough to prevent slipping). These units work best when they can fully evaporate the water, so let the air flow out as fast as it come into the cooled space to maximize the evaporative effect. Also note, these unit must be level to work properly.
