Hooking up package unit straight cool have a red brown yellow green and orange wire in the unit my thermostat wire has all but instead of orange its white can i hook up the orange unit wire to the white thermostat wire

What color wire is connected to the "Y" terminal on the thermostat.
If the unit you are connecting is a heat pump A/C unit the orange wire is for the heating mode. Normally the "Y" terminal on the thermostat. "R" terminal on the thermostat is the power to the thermostat, "W" terminal is for heating, "Y" is for cooling, and "G" terminal is for fan operation. At the condensing unit for cooling the brown and yellow wires would normally be for the cooling.

Honeywell 5000, 8000, 8000 iaq, prestige, round dial analog, digital Honeywell redlink. 1 heat 1 cool thermostat 3 heat 2 cool thermostat. does the stat u have do conventional a/c and heat pump. red wire is hot wire 24 volts not heating its your 24 volt control power. this will be r on your board and t-stat and red wire. y is for cooling mode and is yellow and will be noted y on both board and t stat. green is fan on the indoor furnace and will be g on board and t-stat and the wire is green. blue is the common side of the transformer labeled b on both board and t-stat. Hi, the problem is you have bought the wrong thermostat for the unit if it is not a heat-pump. A heat pump will have W-1, W-2 for heat strips, and Y-2 is for 2nd stage cooling. G is Green for Fan, R is Red for Power, Y is Yellow for cooling, and W would be for Heat. This is all you need if you have gas heat, Orange is for a reversing valve for a heat-pump, and the blue is also for the reversing valve on a Rheem heat-pump. The stat you need will have these terminals, if you are sure its not a heat pump, which I am sure you would know. The stat you need has these terminals. RC and RH. It will have a Red jumper wire connecting the 2 terminals. This is where the Red wire connects, to either one, as they connect together. Connect G to Green, Y to Yellow, and W to white. Since you only have one control transformer, that's why the stat has RH for Red Heating, and RC for Red cooling tied together. Just hook the red coming in to either one. You need only, R, G, Y, and W, to run this unit. Look at your old stat and check the terminals. A heat-pump, uses many more conductors to operate it. O or orange for the reversing valve, blue also depending on the unit. C for common, W1 for stage one heating, W2 for stage 2 heating, Y1 for stage one cooling and Y2 for stage 2 cooling. This stat is used for a commercial unit with multible stages of heat and cooling. If you have a common wire and no batteries on the old stat, go to the indoor unit, remove the panel, and see if you have a common wire hooked up, such as the brown, black, or maybe blue. If so, you will need to hook it up at the stat if it has a C terminal. If it has batteries, just take all of the extra wires and shove them in the wall. You won't need them. Just the R, G, Y, and W, and you will be back on line. Very easy.

R-Red is power
Y-Yellow is cool
B-Blue is cool as well
G-Green is fan leg
W-White is usually heat Leg


If you have no indoor unit and this is a ac/gas or
electric outdoor unit try this.

R to R/Red to Red
G-G/Green to Green
Y-Y/Yellow to Yellow
W-W/White to White
-Dont Hook up Blue.

Turn power back on turn the fan to on,fan should run
Turn to Heating, heating should come on
Turn on Cooling,if cooling does not come on switch yellow with blue.

Wiring instructions for Thermostat Honeywell with Carrier Package


Jumper R to Rc and hook hot wire from transformer to R usually red wire
O = Reversing valve probably white or orange If you get heat when calling for cool or Vice Versa then switch wire from O to the B terminal.
Y = Contactor usually yellow
G = Blower usally green
Jumper Aux to E need to go to unit and use the wire that goes to your Auxiliary or 2nd stage heat
L = Light if you have this terminal on your unit then hook it up.
C = Common from transformer usually black, if you have this terminal on your unit hook this wire up.
Make sure you go to your unit and only hook these wires up if they go to these locations.

Please note. Not all installers use the proper color codes when they install or replace equipment. It may be necessary go go to the furnace or outdoor unit to verify what wires are for what purpose. Also be sure there are no splices in the wire that could change the wire colors between components.
  • R (red) or Rh (Red heat) 24 volts from equipment.
  • Rc (Red cooling) 24 volts from transformer in cooling equipment.
Note: If only furnace has a transformer and cooling equipment does not jumper Rc and Rh.
  • W (White) sends 24 volts to furnace control to start the heating cycle.
  • W2 (no standardized wire color, usually whatever wire color is available) controls second stage heat.
Note: W2 is most often used for heat pumps to control what is called emegency heat or Auxillary heat, and most often will use the white wire.
  • Y (yellow) often (blue) is used, controls cooling unit (outdoor condensing unit) also is used for heat pump heat.
  • Y2 (no standardized wire color, usually whatever wire color is available) controls second stage cooling.
  • G (Green) controls the fan "on" operation of the furnace/air handler. Also often is used to start the blower for many electric furnaces.
  • C (common) most often brown but can also be black or other color available to installer.
  • O (orange) Energizes heat pump reversing valve for cooling (Trane and most other brands).
  • B (Blue) Energizes heat pump reversing valve for heating (Rheem, Ruud and Weatherking).

Turn the power off to the air handler. Open the control cover. Write down what color wires go together at the wiring terminal. All 8 wires are probably not used.
Post the findings here.
In most cases,
E= brown-emergency heat
AUX=white-auxillary heat to supplement HP
Y= yellow-to compressor for heat or cool(hp)
G=green-indoor fan
O-orange-reversing valve on HP when energized in COOL
L=t-stat light(probably not used)
R=red-24v incoming power
B=black-reversing valve on HP when energized in HEAT
C=blue-common wire for 24v
Only one of the "O" or "B" will be used. Not both.

Check to see if you have the system switch accidently on em. heat. The way you have it wired is correct except for the having brown on e. disconnect brown wire and cut ofbare end just in case they have the wire hooked up for constant run on roof.

Blue (C) or sometimes (B) should be your common wire. Look at your schematics and locate common. Your Brown wire is (E) and is emergency heat, white wire (W) is Auxilary Heat, green wire (G) is fan relay, red wire (R) is power, yellow wire (Y) is Cooling and orange wire (O) is reversing valve.
