Codes are to the television maker, they don't change depending on the make of remote used. But as I said, no one buys universals, you buy a copy remote made for the make model you have.

To unlock the V-chip on any tv you must contact the Manufacture of the tv by their 1800 number and if this tv has a built in Dvd player, universal remotes will not code to the tv due to it being a 2 in 1 model. Most Direct tv services also cant program their remotes to these tvs due to the same nature.
Give Akai a call on their 1800- and see if they can go over their process of how to remove the v-chip lock. And get a estimate on a replacement remote.
Target sells a GE Universal Remote Control, 5 Device with learning feature. I can't say if it works with your Verizon DVR, but its code for the Akai LCT3285TA is 1139. If you have the Verizon's remote, you should be able to use the learning function to make the GE control it - that's if the GE doesn't have a built in code that will work for this DVR.
I have had on order since December 2007 the Akai replacement remote #WIR3500001-EQ01 the Akai TV/DVD combo model #CFTD2011. I called each month for 5 months, being told each time that it was on backorder. A few days ago, I received a letter in the mail stating that this remote is no longer made and is not available.
I too have tried universal remotes without any luck. If anyone has a resolution, it would be greatly appreciated.
