My G4 mac computer operates on OSX 10.2.8 and the requirements on the above HD says they require OSX 10.4.7 or later. Will I be able to operate with this HD and what kind of problem might I expect.

YOU WILL BE ABLE TO OPERATE ON THE SAME HARD DISK
YOU HAVE TO FORMAT THIS HD FIRST AS FAT 32 AND THEN PROCEED FOR A NEW SETUP OF MAC VERSION .
SO BACK UP DATA IF YOU ARE DOING SO..

How do I reformat my Iomega eGo hard drive so that it is compatible with my Mac? OSX 10.6.6 The current IOmega format is FAT

First of all, connect the Iomega to you mac, make sure it powers up and is detected by the Mac. Now follow these steps: ( It's important to note the Drive before you begin this task so that you may not make any mistakes.)
  • Open the system drive, usually titled "Macintosh HD." Open Applications, then Utilities and double click the "Disk Utility" program to open it. A window will open giving a list of all the drives currently mounted on the computer.
  • Select the disk that needs to be formatted on the left.
  • Click on the "Erase" tab to the right of the list of drives. The window will now display the options for erasing the hard drive and formatting it to work on the Macintosh computer.
  • Select the Volume Format from the pop-up list. In most cases it's best to leave it at "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" as this is the default. This setting is the best option for running Mac OS X. If there are other requirements for the disk, then select the format that best suits your needs. If you have questions about the formats, refer to your Apple user's manual.
  • Name the hard drive. Type a name for the disk in the field where it asks for the name. This name will always appear when the disk is mounted on a Macintosh computer.
  • Click the erase button. A window will open asking to verify the erase procedure. Click the erase button in this window to start the process of erasing the disk. Once the process is complete, the drive will appear with the name it was given on the left side of the window with the list of drives and on the desktop of the Macintosh computer.
Let me know if you need further help.

Good Luck.

Thanks for using FixYa.

My mac doesn't show the microspot 500gb slim-drive hard drive anywhere...? i've connected the hd with my mac but nothing happens... on the manual i's written, that if i work with macintosh, i should erase...

What model Mac is it? Some earlier models only had USB 1 and they can be problematic when trying to connect a USB2 device.
If you look in the system profiler (go to about this mac and then select More Info) does the drive show there under the USB tab?
Does it show in Disk Utility (in the Utilities Folder) as an external drive?

My WD 250GB passport portable hard drive is not recognized

If your system detects the connected device that is a good start. Was the drive formatted for another operating system? Certainly try the drive on another system and/or another drive on your system.

Mac OS X 10.4.11 SimpleDrive 1TB HD appears on Desktop only occasionally. Does not appear in Disk Utility. Have transferred files to it, light is on, plugged in, just takes several restarts to appear.

If you unplug the power and USB cables from the drive (but not the computer), plug in the power and then plug in the drive, the Mac will remount the drive on the desktop. I am having the same issue, only my old HDD used to be my TimeMachine drive and now I want my SimpleTech drive for that. The issue is that when the SimpleTech drive disappears, OS X automatically uses my old HDD for TimeMachine and all my disk space vanishes.

Very ARRGH!!!

I'm trying to find a better solution, because having to mess with the cables means it's no good for TimeMachine... and very frustrating on top of it.

Mac 10.4.11 Acom data hd/ the hard drive does not show on desktop or file menu. does show in the disk utility.

Is this working before with this Mac Tiger? Or is this the first time you're connecting this HD to your computer?

If first time, there's a possibility that the HD has different file format. It should be formatted as Mac OSX (Journaled) in order for the Mac to recognize it.

If this is working before with this computer, check the status of the HD. Most HDs that could only be detected under the Disk Utility needs a reformat.

IMPORTANT: Formatting the HD would erase all the files inside of it. You may need to bring your HD to the nearest Data Recovery Center to retrieve the files inside and then you may now reformat the HD.

Have a great day!

Freezes up During Backups

I suggest an application called "Disk Warrior" it has always maintained high ratings among us Mac enthusiasts it has a hardware test function built into it and seems to be a little better at verify and repair functions than Disk Utilities which you can try also if you haven't yet. You may also consider trying a different firewire cable if you have one handy. Other than that a reformat should have put the disk back into an original state however the disk could have been damaged by not un-mounting it in rare mac cases. If you have the time you can also reformat the disk again although I would try the first two options first.
