Question about Lowrance GPS

4 Answers

I bought a I-WAY 250c in April 2007 and have been very happy with it but now when I turn it on, it tells me that it requires updating because it's over one year old. I connected it to my computer using the USB cable provided but can't understand how to download the updates into my unit. Can you help?

Hello johnnydionne,

The procedure for updating will probably be to run the installation program with a 256 MB / 512 MB SD card in the slot and the iWay connected via USB. Download the files manually and copy them to the SD card itself. I assume you'd disconnect the iWay from the PC and power-cycle it to begin the update (I just used my external SD card reader to load the card and booted the iWay with it in the slot).

You CAN update with the USB cable to a 256 MB or larger SD/MMC card. The reason you can't do it to the built-in disk partition is it's small size. There must be enough free storage available for the whole 200+ MB to fit. This is due to the operating system's "hiding" of the larger partition of the disk. If the disk were all visible, there would be nothing to prevent you from redistributing licensed, copyrighted map data.

You insert a 256 MB or larger card in the SD/MMC slot with the iWay connected and the installation program will happily write to it. Remove the iWay from the USB port and power it off, then on to begin the update.

You can find the update and instruction manuals here:

The latest update version is 1.3
So the first thing is to see if your already using this version.

  1. Select the MENU icon on the display of your iWAY™ 250C.
  2. Select "Options".
  3. Select the third tab, "Page 3".
  4. Select "Device Information".
  5. The software version for your unit is located under the line that says "iWAY 250C".
  6. If your version is the same version listed above, there is no need to download the software.
And if your not using this version then you'll have to update it.All you have to do is CLICK HERE and everything is explained step by step clearly. This will fix your problem.

    Instructions, as on the webpage

    Installation Instructions

    1. Plug an SD/MMC memory card with at least 20MB of free space into
your iWAY™ 250C, power on the unit, and wait for the unit to complete

    2. Set the iWAY™ 250C power option to “Power Off”. To do this, press
the menu button, select “Options” and then select “Setup” - Then the
      “Power Off” option is accessible.

    3. Turn the iWAY™ 250C off, and then turn it back on.

    4. Wait for the iWAY™ 250C to complete its startup, and then connect it to your PC with a USB cable.

    5. Click on the "Install This Update From the Web" link below.

    6. Wait for the Java web installer to download and run. Follow the
Lowrance update installation instructions. During the installation
process, you will be asked to select the drive associated with the
iWAY™ 250C. If you can not locate the drive associated with the iWAY™
250C, please read this FAQ regarding Drive Conflicts. When the installer finishes you will be prompted to click Finish to exit.

    7. Stop/Eject the USB Mass Storage Device associated with the iWAY™
250C. For Windows, you can do this by opening the "Unplug or Eject
Hardware" icon. This icon is located on the Windows toolbar near the
clock (typically the very lower right-hand corner of your screen), and
appears as a green arrow over the top of a small gray box. Once this is
opened, highlight the USB Mass Storage Device and click the "Stop"
button. Then in the new window, highlight the "Lowrance iWay 250C USB
Device" and click the "OK" button. For Mac and Linux, simply
dismount/eject the drive associated with the iWAY™ 250C.

    8. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer and the iWAY™ 250C.

    9. Turn your iWAY™ 250C unit off. Make sure to turn the unit
completely off, and not just standby mode. To make sure the unit powers
completely off, enter the Menu area, select "Options", select "Page 2",
and then click on "Interface Setup". Choose "Power Off" as the "Power
      Key" option.

    10. Turn your iWAY™ 250C unit back on. The software update will
automatically install. The installation process could take a long time
to finish - please do not press buttons or turn off the iWAY™ 250C
      during the installation process.

    11. After the iWAY 250C update has finished, reconnect it to your computer via USB, and delete the update files from the iWAY 250C.

Cant get the usb cable or port to recognize the gps

This is the info from the Lowrance website
Begin with the iWAY 250C turned off, not just on stand-by. Stand-by is the default setting for the unit when powering down. Change the settings in the interface menu to power off instead of defaulting to stand-by when the power button is pressed. Connect the iWAY 250C to an available PC port. With the PC turned on and operating, turn the iWAY 250C on. The PC should make a sound recognizing a USB connection. If there is no audible sound, try another USB port on your PC. If there is a tone of recognition and the iWAY 250C is not displayed as a separate drive in My Computer, there may be a drive conflict. Change the drive letter of the iWAY 250C. Click here if you have a drive conflict with Windows 95, 98, or ME.

Data card lost all it data

I don't know how it would have "lost" all it's data. More likely is all of it's data was "erased" or "deleted".

Take the card out and put it into your computer or someone else's Iway and see if the file folder is still on there. It probably is. You might just need to reset your Iway. You also might try downloading the newest software update (ver 1.3) from the Lowrance website.
This is not the maps, it's just the software for the unit itself.

If the map file actually isn't on the card anymore, then ask yourself:
Did you make a data card backup to your computer like the user manual suggests?
If yes, put the backup file onto a 2GB SD card and stick it back into your Iway.
If no, then you're out about $90 to buy a new set of maps. They come from Navtec, you can't buy them from Lowrance because Lowrance doesn't produce them.
Good luck

You need to buy the Navteq map update, but you can call them and send in your memory card they will update it for a reduced cost, since 75 plus 12 shipping is too much just for maps, you can buy a whole new one.

Remember to set win explorer to show system/hidden files.
2: Make an account here for free:
3: Download and install TomTom Home:
4: Connect unit to PC, TT Home starts up. If TT Home doesn't start, start it up manually.
5: When unit tells you to, tap Connect to computer

7: Push Update my device from within TT Home.
8: DO NOT disconnect the unit while updating.

When updating is finished, disconnect unit.
The unit will then reboot, and you are done...

You can get one free map update if a new map is avaible within 30 days from when you first started to use the unit. This is done through TT Home...

Good luck.
