My camera work and I even got to take a picture, even though I had a low battery. My camera shut off and told me to change the batteries. I did, and my camera didn't turn on. It said lens error, restart camera. I restarted my camera, and it kept saying the same thing, and now no longer lets me access my camera and the pictures.

  • bonniepjb Feb 28, 2009

I have the exact same problem as above...the camera is only a few months old. It started making a few funny noises intermittently, then one day when I started it up it just made horrible grinding/bad noises, the lens won't retract at all even on restarting the camera, as indicated by the error message...

    NADA!

Lens error on my canon powershot s3 is - lens will not retract

  • Anonymous Apr 25, 2009

My camera says lense error, the lense just stays in and doesnt come out, so i cant take pictures and i cant see the old onesĀ

  • Anonymous May 08, 2009

    ah same problem

  • Anonymous May 10, 2009

    lens error:M425-12 (7f80)

  • pakka77 May 14, 2009

    M527-14 Lens Error 7f80

I guess add me to the list on this one. :(

Figured it was a battery issue, but it was not, fresh batteries did not fix the issue. Draining power from the system to try and get it to reset failed also. I power on, it attempts to extend the lens, fails, tries again, it extends, but gives the error. It had been about a month between last use, which was fine.

  • ntaraski May 19, 2009

my battery died, at that time the lens was out, changed battery, and have a lens error.

poo. what do i do now. my camera is only 13 months old, lucky me, the warranty was for 12 months.

    please advise,

    thanks

i lost my charger, but found a usb that fitted worked for a whole 5 mins then it comes up with system error the lens makes a few grinding noises wont retract then says lens error and turns off???????

  • warriormoral May 24, 2009

Camera wont start because the lens is retracted and the camera tries to extend it but cant. Have tried the tapping and swabbing remedies elsewhere and all have failed.

Camera lens won't shut

This has to be THE most common failure mode for a digital camera. Some common error messages that might show up on the LCD's of cameras with this problem include "E18 lens error" (older Canons), "ACCESS" error (Sony), "Zoom Error" (Fuji), "Lens Obstructed" (Kodak), "lens error, restart camera" or just "lens error" (nearly all camera makers lately use this variation). Some cameras might show nothing at all, but merely make a beeping noise as the lens goes out, then in, then the camera shuts off. Sometimes the lens won't even move.

I have a canon Powershot A480. It keeps coming up with the faultLens Error Restart camera. How do I do this

Service & Support Issue: Camera displays "Lens error, restart camera" on the LCD monitor.
Solution: Possible solutions for a Lens Error message PowerShot A480.

The "E18" or "Lens" error message indicates an error that involves the lens unit or lens cover.
This error may appear where the lens is prevented from properly extending or retracting such as, for example, when pressure is applied to the lens or the area surrounding the lens while handling the camera. The error may also be displayed if the lens unit/camera has been subjected to an external shock, or if a foreign substance (i.e. liquid, sand, dirt) enters the camera. Solution
Check the following when you operate the camera to avoid applying pressure to the lens and surrounding area:
  • Hold the camera so that your fingers do not touch the lens unit when you are shooting.
  • Make sure the camera is off before the camera is placed back in the case. Exercise caution to ensure that the camera does not accidentally power on while the camera is stored inside the case.
If you cannot clear the error code by turning the camera off and then on again, or if the error code is displayed frequently, a camera malfunction may have occurred. Please click here to set up service for your camera online.

Lens error, restart camera

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Lens error, restart camera

Lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. The lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned.
Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal.
More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.
