Question about Garmin Forerunner 305 GPS Receiver

Garmin 305 Heart Rate Function Gone

I was having problems with erratic heart rate readings which usually occur during the first 10 to 20 minutes of a run; however, the other day, I was getting false readings throughtout my entire workout of about 75 minutes. I thought maybe the battery in the chest strap was getting low in power, but when I had it checked, that was not the problem. I put the battery back in and now I am getting no heart rate readings at all.

Yes. I took the battery out to have it tested. It was out for over 2 hours. I have not dropped the unit.

  • Maui Runner May 22, 2008

Garmin 305 - It appears as if the battery is not making proper contact as I am getting no heart rate reading. I had taken it out to get it tested because I was getting very erratic readings. Now I am getting no readings.

  • Maui Runner May 22, 2008

That may solve the problem with the erratic heart rate readings; however, right now my problem is getting any reading at all. I downloaded Webupdater and uploaded all the new software updates. That didn't solve the problem of no heart rate readings.

  • Maui Runner May 22, 2008

I did that twice but still no heart rate reading.

  • Maui Runner May 22, 2008

Yes. The unit turns on and all functions work except for the heart rate readings.

  • Maui Runner May 22, 2008

It was working fine with the exception of some erratic readings. The only thing I did was take the battery out, have it tested, and then put it back in. So, what do you suggest.

  • Maui Runner May 22, 2008

Sorry, I don't understand what you are asking me to do. How do I check just the Pulse Sensor?

  • Maui Runner May 22, 2008

And how do I do that?

  • Maui Runner May 22, 2008

Like I said, I have been having problems with erratic readings, but usually they clear up after running for 10 to 20 minutes. The last time I used it, the heart rate readings were erratic for over an hour. I thought that maybe the battery power was getting low, so I took the battery out and had it tested. It tested out as being fine..plenty of power. Ever since then, I have not been able to get any heart rate readings, not even erratic ones.

  • subok May 31, 2008

Forerunner 305 has been working fine for 6 weeks. Suddenly won't detect heart rate monitor.
    - Heart Rate monitor battery replaced - still won't detect it.
    - Tried another (new) heart rate monitor - won't detect that either.
    - Firmware version is 2.8.
    - Re-installed firmware 2.8 - still won't detect heart rate monitor.
    Any other ideas?

  • larry195 Sep 28, 2008

I replaced the battery in my heart rate sensor and it will no longer connect with the 305. I have turned the 305 off and on, rescanned, restarted, reinstalled the battery, updated the software but it will not register. Maybe the monitor is telling me something?

I am having problems with erratic/no heart rate readings. I thought it maybe the battery in the chest
strap. I replaced the battery and now I only
get heart rate readings when I tap on the chest strap. This is a very erratic reading.
    What is your recommendation?

  • WiscoDan Dec 21, 2008

Heart rate usually works for the first 12-15 minutes.  Then it gives me super low readings...  Absolutely useless readings...  Good thing I spent so much money on a piece of ****...  I think I'm gonna buy a $60 Polar HR monitor that I have faith in...

    this is ridiculous.

  • gppark Dec 30, 2008

same problem. triedall the remedies described. no solution. will garmin replace the hrm?

  • Anonymous Jan 01, 2009

Mt Garmin 305 Forerunner stopped picking up my heart rate from my heart rate monitor. I thought the problem must be the battery so I had it replaced. Stll no heart rate. I recently got an I-phone and I'm wondering if that could be interfering. So I left that at home--but it still didn't work.

Does anyone have a solution? Thanks!

  • jcmecchia Jan 19, 2009

I have been having problems with the heart rate monitor reading. It just does not compute. Then it does for a short period of time in a very erratic way and stops.

my garmin won't pick up the heart rate monitor. I have changed the battery but still nothing

I Have had the same problem couple of times (and forgotten each time how I solved it). I figured it out just now and this is what I did.

1) turn on unit and put on heart monitor (make sure battery is good and wet heart strap)
2) using the mode button navigate the menus to: Settings: General: Accessories: Heart Rate Monitor
3) Once in the Heart Rate Monitor option make sure "Yes" is selected and then use the arrow buttons to highlight "Restart Scan" . Press the enter button to rescan for your heart monitor. (I had to rescan twice)
Go back to the main monitor screen to see if you are recieving heart rate signals.

I am not sure why a manual rescan needs to be done every time but it would be nice if Garmin fixed this issues in a unit software update (my unit has software version 2.80)

This has happened to me before several times and I equated it to moisture in the chest belt. Open the battery door, take out the battery and blow in it. If water of some sort comes out, thats probably the problem. Today, my garmin would not find my old chest belt but with the same battery, it found a new chest belt (came with my new edge 305 cuz I lost one already). Eventually, after tapping on it several times, it picked it up. But then during my workout, it was reading close to 200 when I was really 145. I just opened it up and blew in it and sure enough, water came out. Seems to be working fine now, will leave it open overnight.

The gasket on the battery door might be getting old and I probably should wipe it down with a wet cloth instead of running it under water. I'll probably line the gasket with Vaseline before I close it and maybe put some packaging tape over the door as another water barrier.

Hope that helps!

In the settings/general/accesories/heartrate monitor click on restart scan. This tells your Forerunner to rescan to pick up your heart rate monitor.

The possible problem could be on the pulse sensor it possibly not functioning thats why it never give out any reading..

check if you turn or you have done correct settings..
a possible wrong settings will give a heart reading but not accurate.. so now there was no output on how you get work on the day just check the pulse sensor if it still functiong..

Try to test or try to simulation on the unit..

Post back again & hear more again from you..

Thank you

BTW... before you experienced that the device not giving any heart/pulse reading, is there any initial incidents occur before it was not really functioning..?

    Thanks

Thanks for the update. Since the unit powers on and only the heart rate function doesn't work...I suspect the sensor of your unit has malfunctioned.

I had the same problem.
Try a soft reset and then a hard reset:

The soft reset is simply performed by pressing the lap + mode buttons at the same time. This will cause your unit to power down if it is on/frozen (and often the unit appears off when frozen). No data will be lost using this reset. Press the power button to startup and most problems will be cleared.

Hard-Reset - holding down the mode button while powering on (two buttons, that's it). When your unit powers on you will be prompted as to whether you really want to perform the reset or not (be sure you do if you answer yes as you will lose your data). This reset often needs to be preceded by the soft-rest

How do i change a battery in a garmin 305

Hi David!

From your Owners Manual (Page 54)
http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/984_OwnersManual.pdf

REPLACE THE HEART RATE MONITOR BATTERY

"The heart rate monitor contains a user replaceable CR 2032 battery...
Locate the circular battery cover on the back of the heart rate monitor. Use a coin to twist the cover counter-clockwise until it is loose enough to remove. Remove the cover and replace the battery. Be careful not to lose or damage the o-ring gasket on the cover. Then use a coin to twist the cover back into place."

Hope this helps.

Battery change, now no signal

I found this on the internet......

In the battery compartment there’s a gold contact that touches the top of the battery (+ve) which was in a position that would never make contact with the battery. I bent it out slightly, made sure the battery was seated correctly (i.e. flat) and as if by magic my heart rate appeared on the large Garmin display!

Also found this..........

I Have had the same problem couple of times (and forgotten each time how I solved it). I figured it out just now and this is what I did.

1) turn on unit and put on heart monitor (make sure battery is good and wet heart strap)

I am not sure why a manual rescan needs to be done every time but it would be nice if Garmin fixed this issues in a unit software update (my unit has software version 2.80

The 305 uses distance to calculate calories. They sell a "foot pod" that you can use indoors, and that will count your calories by calculating the distance you have traveled. The problem however, is that using distance to calculate calories is so inaccurate! The calorie count that the 305 provides is almost always WAY too high. Other heart rate monitors use heart rate to calculate calories burned, and it is a much more accurate measure. My garmin thinks i burned 700 calories an hour today while i was snowboarding, and, while that would be nice, there is NO way it's true!!
