Question about Xerox Phaser 8500/DN Printer

1 Answer

Phaser 8500DN Xerox recently had me update the firmware on our printer here in the office and now it won't even boot. It loops the power-cycle, say's initializing and restarts, no menu's or logos. Is there a way to get into diagnostic mode or reset back to the old firmware??

I tried the ram with no luck. I can't see the little orangish knobs you speak of though...is that where the ram is?

My main problem is, I can't get back into the printer to reset the firmware because it won't even boot up.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrr. Do you have a maintenance agreement? If you do call them back and tell them to get there asap.
Sounds very much like the firmware is corrupted. If you cant get to diagnostics, here is what you can try.
On the back of the machine open the panel to access the memory, remove the memory and power the machine up with the memory removed. Let it fault out, then replace the memory and start it again. See if that works.
Then remove and reseat the main board by turning the orangish knobs and sliding the board out and back in.
It really sounds like the upload corrupted and Xerox needs to resolve this for you.
They will try and say it's not their fault, but if they directed you to do the upgrade, they are at fault and should fix it for you.
Unless, and I very much doubt the old software is on their site, no you cant go back to the old firmware, you may try reloading it and see if it loads correctly.

Xerox phaser 8500 error 19003.48:33702

19.003:48 is the error code 33702 is the number of pages the unit has printed. the error indicates a power difference of +- 20% when trying to drive the printhead. The issue is the Electronics Module (System logic and power) or the Wave Amplifier (Printhead Controller). Both of the parts are fairly easy to replace. If it is the wave amp it is a somewhat affordable part.if it is the EM you should replace the printer. It isn't worth the fix.

Mac upgrade means Xerox printer won't print!

There are apparently incompatibilities between some Xerox drivers and the security-improved Snow Leopard. It seems that many pieces of software (and drivers) relied on not-so-clean techniques to cut corners while operating. These techniques are no longer allowed by Snow Leopard (the same problem afflicts XP SP3, Vista and Seven).

This article lists several problems, explanation and (perhaps) fixes:

Meanwhile, Apple is working to some workarounds too (there is an update linked in the article which may be of interest to you).

Hi
Your print head is not moving properly.
If the printer is not level, then ink seeps down the print head and get into the print head mechanism.
Check and clean this out.

You have either an intermittent Electronics module or a intermittent print head. Lowest cost new from Xerox is $750.
Phaser printers are expensive.

The error indicates an ink stick was jammed. You have to clear the ISC (ink stick count) error.

Turn off the printer.
Turn on the printer.
As soon as you see XEROX start moving across the display hold down the back and help buttons until you see "beginning service mode" on the display.
Release the buttons, it will now come up in the service mode.
Scroll down to the function menu, hit ok, scoll to clear isc faault, hit ok.
Hit the back button to get back to the first menu then exit diagnostics, hit ok when it asks if you want to restart in customer mode.

Problems with printer settings

Interesting. I tried printing a simple 3-page Excel spreadsheet sent my by a colleague to my 8500DN from Microsoft's Excel Viewer and got a timeout error formatted as follows:

ERROR: timeout
OFFENDING COMMAND: timeout

STACK:

42
-mark-
(84,160)

No idea what this means, but resetting the network parameters (even though I use USB connection) from the printer's front panel cleared the problem. The printer would print nothing else from any program until I performed this reset. Wonder if Excel futzes with settings and printing somehow?

1) verify that the power is plugged into a known good power plug in the wall. make sure there is not a surge protector, extension cord connected to it.

2) disconnect any usb and/or ethernet cables.

3) reseat the ram

4) disconnect any optional accessories such as lower trays, hard drives, etc. to isolate any possible items taking down the printer.
