Question about GPS Devices

My Nuvi 360 volume for the voice prompts is too low, even on the highest setting. I also have a Nuvi 200, and the volume is fine on that unit. But if I get a phone call on my 360, the volume is OK. Is there any way to increase the volume of the voice prompts?

Hacking the voice file fixed my problem!!!! Thanks so much to favnamy00 for supplying the fix. I had to download a hex editor to make the fix, and found an editor named XVI32 (free) that did the job very well. I cranked up American Jill and American Jack to 95 (they were both set at 65).

It is possible to turn up the voice level...but you have to be willing to hack the voice file a wee bit with a hex editor.
Just Open the .vpm file you want to modify in the hex editor, and search for "<voice_volume>96</voice_volume>" without the quotation marks...and change the numerical value - I have Australian Karen cranked up to 96. This makes the sound level of the voice prompts comparable to the MP3 level when I hook my Nuvi350 into my vehicle's sound system via the added line input that takes the place of the non-existent CD changer. Before I did this, when I played MP3s at a comfotable listening level, the voice prompts were too quiet. Now, they're comparable.

If you want to hack the volume on most gps units and also change the voice prompts, for ex. my 885t always says "recalculating", i changed it to " you missed, recalculating, you dummy", my friends get a kick out of it. i tried to do the approach listed above, but, with my unit, the voices would not be on the garmin unit anymore and i would have to reload them. so i found this really slicker than snail snot, website by "turboccc" it is: http://turboccc.wikispaces.com

this site is a lifesafer for most who use gps units, and he even responds to questions. so if u like what he offers please contribute something to him through paypal. i am not his friend just really glad i found his site, it is the best around - Guaranteed and there are other great apps there also- including the best working editor for gps i have come across - with instructions etc

I have a Garmin 200 and it no longer talks to me?

From the main menu tap tools, settings, language, and then select a language for the voice. If theres none to select from then you need to download garmin webupdater from http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

Connect your unit to your PC, install and run garmin webupdater and follow the onscreen prompts, on the additional updates page scroll down and find the voices with "TTS" as well as the regular ones and install them to your unit. Then go back into your units language settings and select a voice.

Nuvi stopped talking. where is the mute button located on the unit?

If you are no longer getting the voice guidance from your gps, then you need to check if the volume is on the highest or lowest. There is no mute button on the gps, it is when the volume is at the lowest it seems muted. Ensure the volume is turned up by adjusting the scroll whell that is by the right hand side of the unit.
If that does not help, then you check the language settings in the unit. Verify that the voice is enabled, by following these steps:
  1. from the 'where to? view map' screen, touch 'tools',
  2. Touch 'language',
  3. Next to 'voice language' you will see 'jill' listed in the blue box on the right (if so the unit should be ready to use)
  4. If you do not see a 'voice' listed in the blue box, touch on the blue box,
  5. Select 'voice',
  6. Touch 'ok' at the bottom,
That should do the work for you.

I do not have any voice but do have picture. Volume is turned up.

If you are not receiving any sound on your nuvi 200 or 205 series device the first thing to check is that the sound is not muted. To ensure that your units sound is not muted please perform the following:
  1. Turn the device on
  2. Press the Volume button on the 'Where To?', 'View Map' screen
  3. Ensure the Mute box is not 'checked'
If the mute button is not 'ticked', you will need to change the voice to ensure that the preset voice is not faulty:
  1. Turn the device on
  2. Touch the Tool icon
  3. Touch Settings
  4. Touch Language
  5. Touch the language voice next to Voice
  6. Scroll through and select another appropriate voice

If changing the voice is not helping you will need to ensure that you are running the latest software which can be done by installing a program called WebUpdater. WebUpdater can be installed via the link below:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-27

Once updated please allow the unit to reboot which will ensure the software successfully installs.

If after following all the above the final steps would be to perform a master reset:

Note: A master reset will erase all waypoints or favorites and will restore your unit to the default factory settings.
  1. Start with the unit OFF and unplugged from power
  2. Touch and hold the lower right corner of the screen with an index finger or the eraser end of a pencil
  3. Continue touching and holding the lower right hand corner of the screen then power the unit ON
  4. Release the power button when the device powers on. After 5-10 seconds you will see a new message: Do you really want to erase all user data?
  5. Remove your finger from the touchscreen when this message displays
  6. Touch Yes

The device will automatically reset. Please follow the on screen prompts on the nuvi and when completed place your device in an area with a clear view of the sky until it acquires satellites.

I purchased a Garmin at Sams Club. Around $200.

Go into the tools section of the unit. There is a way to set the volume level there.

No voice prompts on my new nuvi 750- volume level not muted.

This will work--go to Tools, Settings, Language and then select a Language that has TTS following it--this is the text to speech choice. Choose English TTS Jill if you like to hear the woman.

I have my garmin nuvi 350 on max volume control and still have difficulty hearing prompts is there a secret way i can override and increase the volume even more?

Maybe you speaker is defective. have you tried plugging in a set of headphones and listening if the audio is louf throgh the headphones?

There is ano secret way to do what you are asking. While there is a way to change the volume for the voice within the voice file, you need a hex editor do this and it's beyond the scope of this forum.

Try listening with headphones. If you have sound there, then your internal speaker has gone bad.

Stop transfering voice from Sony Ericson P910i and Garmin Nuvi 660

Can you update the firmware on your unit
my k800i sony phone had a problem synchronising and would freeze, then one day the nuvi 660 updated the firmware by itself and has been fine since, only problem being the volume, a bit low when trying to contest with large diesel engine, onboard speaker keen to distort over 80% volume
