Windows update not working and system restore cannot be enable

As of 4/26/08 windows update has tired to take updateKB938371 and cannot take it and now my system restore is disabled and i cannot access it to enable it again

    as i went into cotrol pannel and to add remove programs their is no update aera on this page sorry!Thanks for trying though!

    Again tjier is no up listed in the add remove program so thanks anyway

    also yes i know their are other updates however my update took the one that should have fallowed KB938371 update now it wont take KB938371 as it was suppose to fallow the other updates. thir is no space or aera to delte any updates on my computer. again thank for trying to help sincerelyShortcircut

Try going to the CP - Add/remove programs... updates. Remove the up date.
Go to microsoft and there should be two other updates to install first. microsoft reports people having trouble with this update without the other two updates first.

    There is a checkbox at the top "show updates", check the box then look for the update.

Restore your computer to a earlier stage. . .
Win 7 START >> type restore >> select SYSTEM RESTORE . . . follow the steps & set a restore time before that update

WIN 8 search for SYSTEM RESTORE in the settings section

No audio and mixer device installed


1) Check all of the drivers in the device manager (I'm using on deck sound). All are functioning properly.
2) Do the suggested "Add Hardware" option to update to the latest drivers, all of which I already had.
3) Start -> Run -> services.msc -> Windows Audio, and made sure it was started up and set to automatically start on setup.
4) Made sure that the sound was enabled in the BIOS.
5) Insert a modified "machine.inf" file into the Plug and Play Enumerator.
6) Start -> Run -> msconfig -> Services, and made sure Windows Audio was checked and running.
7) System Restore (to check if one of the updates might have caused the problem)
8) Make sure the speakers were still functioning properly

is your hardware enabled ?
check it out via control panel -sound,speech and audio - sound and audio devices - hardware.
highlight your sound device and click on properties.
at the bottom of the window check that the device is Enabled.

Window vista home premium stop working after installing updates??


You can restore your system to an earlier point to avoid the updated vista.

To do so: 1.Type "restore" in the search field of your START MENU, 2.Click on SYSTEM RESTORE 3.Chose a suitable restore point , before your vista got updated. 4.successfully complete the system restore and restart.
When you restore your pc to an earlier point, updates are cancelled and in this way you can avoid the updates.

The easiest way is to use system restore. Once you have done this, disable automatically download and install updates, if you have it enabled. When downloading updates be sure to un-check windows genuine advantage notifications.

System protection option is not coming in the system protection option of the system window , then how should i enable system restore.


  1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. On the Performance tab, click File System, or press ALT+F.
  3. On the Troubleshooting tab, click to select the Disable System Restore check box.
  4. Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
  5. To re-enable System Restore, follow steps 1-3, but in step 3, click to clear the Disable System Restore check box.

How do i get rid of a W32.SillyFDC virus


The following instructions pertain to all current and recent Symantec antivirus products, including the Symantec AntiVirus and Norton AntiVirus product lines.
  1. Disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP).
  2. Update the virus definitions.
  3. Run a full system scan.
  4. Delete any values added to the registry.

For specific details on each of these steps, read the following instructions.

1. To disable System Restore (Windows Me/XP)
If you are running Windows Me or Windows XP, we recommend that you temporarily turn off System Restore. Windows Me/XP uses this feature, which is enabled by default, to restore the files on your computer in case they become damaged. If a virus, worm, or Trojan infects a computer, System Restore may back up the virus, worm, or Trojan on the computer.

Windows prevents outside programs, including antivirus programs, from modifying System Restore. Therefore, antivirus programs or tools cannot remove threats in the System Restore folder. As a result, System Restore has the potential of restoring an infected file on your computer, even after you have cleaned the infected files from all the other locations.

Also, a virus scan may detect a threat in the System Restore folder even though you have removed the threat.

For instructions on how to turn off System Restore, read your Windows documentation, or one of the following articles:

Note: When you are completely finished with the removal procedure and are satisfied that the threat has been removed, reenable System Restore by following the instructions in the aforementioned documents.

2. To update the virus definitions
Symantec Security Response fully tests all the virus definitions for quality assurance before they are posted to our servers. There are two ways to obtain the most recent virus definitions:
  • Running LiveUpdate, which is the easiest way to obtain virus definitions.

    If you use Norton AntiVirus 2006, Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 10.0, or newer products, LiveUpdate definitions are updated daily. These products include newer technology.

    If you use Norton AntiVirus 2005, Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition 9.0, or earlier products, LiveUpdate definitions are updated weekly. The exception is major outbreaks, when definitions are updated more often.


  • Downloading the definitions using the Intelligent Updater: The Intelligent Updater virus definitions are posted daily. You should download the definitions from the Symantec Security Response Web site and manually install them.

The latest Intelligent Updater virus definitions can be obtained here: Intelligent Updater virus definitions. For detailed instructions read the document: How to update virus definition files using the Intelligent Updater.

3. To run a full system scan
  1. Start your Symantec antivirus program and make sure that it is configured to scan all the files.

    For Norton AntiVirus consumer products: Read the document: How to configure Norton AntiVirus to scan all files.

    For Symantec AntiVirus Enterprise products: Read the document: How to verify that a Symantec Corporate antivirus product is set to scan all files.


  2. Run a full system scan.
  3. If any files are detected, follow the instructions displayed by your antivirus program.
  4. Delete the autorun.inf file from writeable removable devices, if necessary.
Important: If you are unable to start your Symantec antivirus product or the product reports that it cannot delete a detected file, you may need to stop the risk from running in order to remove it. To do this, run the scan in Safe mode. For instructions, read the document, How to start the computer in Safe Mode. Once you have restarted in Safe mode, run the scan again.


After the files are deleted, restart the computer in Normal mode and proceed with the next section.

Warning messages may be displayed when the computer is restarted, since the threat may not be fully removed at this point. You can ignore these messages and click OK. These messages will not appear when the computer is restarted after the removal instructions have been fully completed. The messages displayed may be similar to the following:

Title: [FILE PATH]
Message body: Windows cannot find [FILE NAME]. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then click Search.

4. To delete the value from the registry
Important: Symantec strongly recommends that you back up the registry before making any changes to it. Incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify the specified subkeys only. For instructions refer to the document: How to make a backup of the Windows registry.
  1. Click Start > Run.
  2. Type regedit
  3. Click OK.

    Note: If the registry editor fails to open the threat may have modified the registry to prevent access to the registry editor. Security Response has developed a tool to resolve this problem. Download and run this tool, and then continue with the removal.

  4. Navigate to the following registry subkeys:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\"load"

  5. In the right pane, delete any values associated with the worm.


  6. Exit the Registry Editor.

Hi there. My name is Alex and Im here to help solve your problem

First of all, AVG has always had a problem installing when windows updates are enabled and download and install automatically. I would recommend uninstalling all updates that have been installed to your computer and disable automatic updates which I will explain to you below

To uninstall the updates.
Click start, settings and click control panel.
On the icon add and remove programs, please double click
You will now see all the programs and updates installed on your computer. The microsoft updates are located near to the bottom of the list and there may be a lot of them installed. You can only uninstall one update at a time. You may be prompted that uninstalling a windows update may cause a program not to work properly, this is normal so you can continue uninstalling them. When you have uninstalled these updates please restart your computer.

To disable the automatic updates

Right click on your icon My computer or My pc which is located on the desktop or on the start menu (if you are running windows xp) and select properties
You will then see a sub menu called 'Automatic updates' and inside this menu you will have the choice to disable the updates

If you are using windows xp and you have system restore enabled on your computer, then you will be able to take the computer back to an earlier time when it was working correctly. Please save all documents first to insure that nothing will be lost if you decide to do a 'system restore'. There is a very friendly wizard to help you restore your computer. You can get to the system restore by clicking start, programs, accesories, system tools and selecting system restore.

Regarding your problem about your desktop disappearing, to restore your icons on the desktop, right click anywhere on the desktop and select organise icons and be sure that the heading 'show desktop icons' is ticked. This will restore your desktop items

To get to the system restore (if that's what you are asking for?), go to Control Panel - Performance and Maintenance - and System Restore will likely show in the top sidebar to the left. If this is a new problem, likely restoring to an earlier date could correct it. In the alternative, perhaps you need to update Internet Explorer before attempting any further O/S updates. Additionally, I would suggest a full system backup so you aren't completely unprotected if something major fails. Thanks for rating FixYa!
