Question about SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 500GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive - Onyx

Simplech simple drive not operational.

I used my simpledrive last night, and shut the computer down when I went to bed. When I woke up and turned everything on the simpledrive started making a repititious beeping noise, and cannot be accessed or even recognized by my computer. Is this thing broken already? I have only had it since November.

I Just Purchased a 1 TB External hard drive from SimpleTech.. Supposedly its supposed to recognize as soon as you plug it in but it keeps saying USB Device found and wants drivers for it. I called tech support and they kept saying there are no drivers and that it should be recognized immediately.

My simpledrive recently fell of my desk, but it seemed to be working fine. Now, like 2 days after it happened, computer doesn't recognize it, it just beeps. Although I noticed the fan is making a deeper noise than it used to. I don't mind if I have to buy a new drive (I've had this one for a while), but I'd like to at least be able to rescue my data...

I have the same problem, on a 1 TB drive, though. The drive was working just fine, and then just stopped working and now beeps when power is turned on. I spoke to a tech and he said "well it sounds like there is a problem with the drive" oh, gee, you think? He said to send it in for replacement, because anytime the actual drive beeps, it is "something wrong with the drive". Wow what great technical support! My suggestion is do not put anything of any importance to you on one of these drives! Not if you want to keep it!

Same here. Red light and sounds like the disk is skipping (kinda sounds like a beeping). Has anyone resolved this?

I have a 2007 SimpleTech PininFarina 320GB USB drive that stopped working. Windows XP recognized the USB interface, but was unable to load the drivers. Also, while the drive has always been quite I noticed that I could not hear the drive motor. So.... I opened the case only to find the drive moved forward because the mounts failed. Result the SATA connection was not connected...no power!

I found both, and only, plastic supports to hold the Hitachi drive failed. During manufacturing the screws were overtightened which cracked the plastic mounts. As I continued to carry the drive around the mounts eventually failed. So I removed the drive and drilled two new holes in the unused mounts. NOTE that I did not tighten the screws down...only snugged up to the plastic (I drilled the holes for an exact fit...If you wish to enlarge the holes use small washers between the drive and the mount...the extra 1/16" play between the drive and the mount is why the mounts failed).

To open the case remove the four screws on the bottom of the unit. Two are visible, and two are under the serial number sticker near the front. The top will now lift straight off once the front relase tab pops free. Note that there is no way to "release" the tab (tab is in the middle (side to side) and approximately 1/2" from the front). Just keep pulling gently, and pray. Once the top is loose switch wires allow you just enough room to place the top on the work surface and repair the unit. Also the side panels will slide straight up and off once the top is removed.

Good luck. This is the reason my drive failed...and I suspect the reason many others failed since the mounts were not properly fastened.

I have the same problem with my 1TB SimpleTech hard drive. At first, it was recognized and there was no problem, but sometimes my computer wants drivers for it and will not recognize it. There are no drivers for it, its supposed to be plug and play, but it doesn't even show up in my hardware list. The website and support are not helpful!

"not working" SimpleDrive 1TB Turbo

Hi Mav, According to the specs at SimpleTech, the HDD is plug and play, so here is what I would try.
  • unplug the HDD
  • open the Device Manager
  • click on the + next to Hard Disks
  • select the drive
  • uninstall the driver
  • turn the computer off
  • reboot
  • turn it off again
  • plug in the HDD
  • reboot
Window should reinstall the HDD. If that does not work, I would then download CCleaner from Piriform, link is listed below. Once you have it installed, use the Registry Cleaner after uninstalling the HHD driver. Select "clean all" when prompted. Make sure that when CCleaner asks if you want to backup the Registry to select Yes, just in case something does go wrong you can restore the Registry to as it was before. I have used this program on many different systems and never had a problem. After cleaning, shut down and plug the HDD back in and reboot. By the way, CCleaner has some other great utilities that help keep your computer clean.
  • If this helps resolve your issue, would you please rate the solution. If this does not help, please leave a comment giving me more information on the problem and I will try to help you further.

Yes, you should turn the HD off when not in use. The direct drive mechanism is constantly turning when current is applied. Turning off the unit will preserve it. Four years is quite a long time for a hard drive and may need replacement soon.

I have 500GB SimpleDrive USB 2.0 External Hard Drive, but currently i am facing some problems with it. When i plug it in to my computer, the computer says that unknown device. and it also does not come to...

I would unplug the external drive then shut down your computer. Plug the drive in(be sure the USB port is in good working order.)Turn the computer on. If it does not recognize the drive search online for tech support for that particular drive. Install any drivers or software. Be sure to find out if the drive is compatible with your operating software. Make sure all connectors are seating firmly and correctly. Make sure that everything is plugged in where it should be plugged in.

My computer doesn't recognize the SimpleDrive...

Hello jajogeglez,

You may need to use another USB device, be it another flash drive to narrow down if it's just your Simpledrive that's causing this.

You can also update the USB devices under your Device Manger using the CD driver for your motherboard.

Hope this helps.

Haskel, Have you tried a different USB wire? Constantly remove of the cord can wear down the contacts/something is on the contacts? Check that I'll get back to you if I find anything relevant. Good Luck, Tim
