'communication error' and won't turn off

I cannot get my computer (G5 imac running 10.4.11) to talk to my Epson 1800 printer. I keep getting the 'communication error' message from the printer utility. Please note that:

- nothing has changed in my computer set-up since I last used it without problem a few days ago

- I tested the firewire cable by plugging an external drive into it which mounted on my mac without problem

- I have rebooted mac and printer a few times with no change

- The printer seems to go through it's start-up routine without throwing up any errors but I notice that I cannot switch it off via the power switch - I have to pull the cable out of the back

I think there is something wrong with the printer but what and how do I fix it? Any advice appreciated.

Julien

My R1800 had been unplugged for a while after I moved. About three weeks. It'd been in this scenario before and worked fine. Anyway, when I went to turn it on again, the power light came on, the low ink light came on, and the carriage slowly moved to the left... then nothing. No flashing lights, no pump motor, and I had to unplug it to turn it off.

Since I have unlocked the carriage, moved it to the middle, and turned it on just to see if it would return the carriage. It did, but with those two lights remaining on, and very, very slowly. Still have to unplug it.

I accidentally plugged the USB cable into the printer the wrong way round and now I just get communication error messages. There are no flashing lights and the control panel is functioning as normal. Is it likely to be a software malfunction and should I to re-install?

From my experience, FW and Epson printers don't always work well together.

Switch it to USB then delete and re-add the printer in the PRINTER SETUP UTILITY, and you should be okay

The issue is not whether firewire or USB, but I think epson puts cheap switches/sockets in. My printer was doing the same thing, I realized the Firewire socket had died... it now works perfectly that I've switched to USB.

Communication error typically means that your printer and computer aren't talking. Assuming you're using a USB cable, try a replacement cable, in another socket on the computer.

If you are getting a 'carriage jam' error as soon as you turn on your Epson printer with no tasks in progress, then check for any piece of paper stuck in the carriage. Remove the paper carefully. If the paper tears, part of it might remain inside the paper path and damage the product.

Fix 'Carriage Jam' : Open Door, clear carriage jam,
and then press OK to continue' error message
Turn off the printer and open it to see where the paper is stuck.
Manually move the carriage toward the opposite side.
Check the paper path and remove any piece of paper or any other object that is stuck in the path.
Reconnect the power cord and turn on the printer.

Can't print from HP 2540 aio to my Imac PowerPc G5 OS X 10.5.8 The Imac keeps telling that the printer is offline.

A quick look at the HP web site for this printer shows that it only supports Max OS X 10.6 and later. These versions only support the intel processor based macs. Your PowerPC mac is, unfortunately, obsolete as far as Apple and the peripheral manufacturers are concerned and is not supported.

Epson r320 printer w/ no advance settings when linked w/ new IMAC

I had the same problem when installing my Epson R300 onto my new iMac (Snow Leopard). The first install used the newest online driver from Epson. The printer symptoms were exactly like yours. Then I installed the Apple driver updates. It was seamless and now the printer settings can be accessed. Perhaps if you uninstalled (read about that on the Epson site first) and then downloaded the new factory driver, followed by the Apple update which will further update files, you might have some luck. Just a guess on my part. Best wishes.

Communication error between Epson Printer and iMac

Normal 0 Driver could be corrupt.
Disconnect the printer or at least be sure it is turned off. I'd do both and reinstall the CD software program that came with the printer. When the software program asks you to connect the printer to the USB port, do so and it should again work properly.
Hope this helps. Bud

"Communication error"

HI-

How do you connect the printer to your imac? what type of cable are you using? if its a USB connection, then try going to system profiler and under hardware click on USB and on USB device tree you should have highspeed USB 2.0 and when you highlight that, it should give info for manufacturer as EPSON if thats the brand of the printer you are currently using. update me on this so that we can check if its really communicating with your imac-- thanks!
