Question about HP Compaq Presario R4000 Notebook

1 Answer

Presario R4000 does not detect 2GB of memory

Hello,

My laptop is a Compaq Presario R4000 (PN495AV) and will support up to 2 GB maximum. I am trying to upgrade the memory from 2 x 256MB to 2 x 1GB. I have 333MHz PC2700 DDR chips.

With both chips installed, the laptop will not even boot to POST. Nothing is on the screen.

The laptop boots fine with 1GB and Windows XP Professional load fine.

With 1GB and 1 x 256MB installed, POST shows 1280MB but Windows XP will not load. I know Windows XP (32-bit) will recognize up to 3GB (4GB addressable) so I suspect a hardware problem.

Any ideas?

Many thanks,
Tom

    Hi Theknack,

Each chip works fine in either slot alone. I checked the HP site and they have a newer BIOS so I will try it next. I also heard back from the memory retailer who has another customer with the same problem and he said a BIOS upgrade fixed it. I will let you know the result. Many thanks.

Hi PhotoTom,
I check you laptop specification and it really do support uptp 2 GB. So here I'm not sure your 1GB are both of them DDR 333Mhz ?? .If so what I really want you to test here is
1. 1 GB in one slot and turn it on (as you say you can boot wih it) after that move that 1 GB to the other slot and see.
2. try the same with the other 1GB and see that both work fine on both slot or not.
Incase both work fine on both slot then maybe problem with hardware what I want you to do after that is try to check your BIOS version and check on the website that they do have new BIOS version or not ?? Coz this can help incase problem are from BIOS.

Goodluck,takecare.

HP Compaq Presario R4000 (PN495AV) PC Notebook How

Yes, go to Start>Control panel>Power Options. There also should be a screen brightness key on your key board, that looks like a sun shining, with arrows pointing up & down. To use that key, hit the FN key, right next to the Ctrl key. Push & hold the FN key, while pushing the up arrow. That should increase the brightness of your display. Good luck.

Can I upgrade my acer 5315 memory to 2GB with two 1GBs in two slots or I can put two 2GB slots adding up to 4GB? Thanks

You can upgrade it to 2GB (MAX) if icon_detail.gifMemory Type: DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 (non-ECC)
Maximum Memory: 2GB
Slots: 2
Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.

Hope this helps.

Compaq Presario Notebook V3000T I replaced the 2-256mb memory cards with 2-1g memory cards. System boots up but only reads 1024mb?

Thanks to Microsoft Knowledge Base for help with my answer:

First, find out what the maximum amount of memory is. This is generally listed by most of the manufacturers. This will let you know what upgrade potential the system has. Next, determine how the memory configuration is when you buy the system. For example, a laptop that has 2GB of memory can be configured as either a single 2GB module or two 1GB modules. The single memory module allows for better upgrade potential because by adding another module you are gaining more memory without sacrificing any current memory. Upgrading the two module situation with a 2GB upgrade would result in the loss of one 1GB module and a memory total of 3GB.

COMPAQ LAPTOP MAMORY EXTEND

This laptop has 2 slots
Each memory slot can hold DDR PC2700 with a maximum of 512MB per slot.
So maximum memory supported is 1GB.
If you install more memory there is a high probability it will not be recognised.

You can get more information and order memory from the link below:

Adding an additional memory module to laptop...wont start!!!

The problem is that your laptop only supports 2 GB of RAM. If there is not a newer bios allowing more then 2 GB is the max you can go. Since you put the 2 GB in one slot then the other slot will be useless. It wouldn't matter how much you put in the 2nd slot because the bios already says you have 2 GB on board and will not accept anymore. Sorry.

No Power vailable to Compaq R4000 PN495AV

well..this will require a new motherboard(around 200.00) and two hours of tech time(around 200.00) so compaq was high, but not that high..

check in the repair listings at fixya for more on this option
