SimpleDrive disconnect My SimpleDrive 250 GB keeps saying it can't stop my generic volume device because it is in use and to close programs and windows that might be using the device. I have eliminated all shortcuts, turned off my printer. What else? Note: I generally locate the problem, but cant now.

This is caused by the drive letter assignments done by XP and 2003 server. To stop the drive you will need to access Computer Management, Drive Management and locate the drive assignments for the partitions on the drive. Remove the drive letter assignments (has not caused any data issues in my usage). After the drive letters have been removed you can stop. After several calls with SimpleTech they finally said to just unplug without stopping if the drive will be used on the same machine again. If you are moving to another machine the only issue with not removing the drive letter assignments is that the current assignments may conflict with assignments for CD's or other drives on the new machine.

Do you have an anti virus program installed int your computer and is it updated? then run a complete system scan. The problem occurs when some script or virus is active and running in the device which you are trying to stop. generally, completely scanning the system and removing any threats present solves the problem. Sure did worked for me. Give it a try

Sounds like a disk error and it cant read the start of the drive. If it still detects it you might be able to repair it with a partition recovery or partition repair tool available online.

Hello marieborja10,
This happens some times when a program is accessing something on the drive. Make sure all files that were opened are closed. Also, make sure any open folders are closed.
If it still fails to eject, it is perfectly safe to pull the USB connector out as long as all programs/files/folders are closed.
Hope this helps!

As long as the activity light is not on/flashing and all programs using the drive are closed, it is OK to unplug the drive. If you want to be on the safe side, turn off the computer, then unplug the hard drive.

The device Generic Volume cannot be stopped right now. try stopping the device again later. on Window XP

If you tried to stop your external hard drive with it open in Windows Explorer, You will get this message. You cannot disconnect the drive in this condition. Even if you close Windows Explorer after, Windows still thinks it is open. The best thing to do, is restart Windows and when the screen goes black, shut the power off to the external drive or disconnect the USB cable. Disconnecting in any other way causes Windows to have problems with USB devices in the future.
