Hp Pavillion laptop. Powers up intermittantly. we purchased 2 of these for my sons one of which was repaired FOC (motherboard replaced) as a goodwill gesture as it was only 1 month out of warranty. Now the other one has the same fault.Seems its a common problem with HP Laptops but just wondered if you may be able to help with an alternitive solution to this very expensive repair? (around £300.00)

Hi Pinky01,

thanks for the response to my problem. I have contacted HP but they are not interested because the laptops are no longer warranted. We have had a response from the retailer and they will come and take a look at it but are making no promises but fingers crossed they may do a foc repair.

thanks again!

I think HP should do the repair for free. Since you've had the problem previously, it is not like you want a repair for the first time. Let them know what happened.

You will want to contact HP support directly to order the necessary part. The serial number of the machine in question will allow them to locate the correct part for you and set up a purchase and ship unless they prohibit non-HP repairs.

The HP Pavilion DV's have a common problem with their motherboard which relates mainly to the overheating of the video processor to a degree that its connections (solder points) with the motherboard melts by usage, causing loose connection & hence failure of the motherboard. This is a common problem well-known by laptop repair technicians for this family of HP Pavilions.

Try booting your computer in safe mode... when your machine starts press F8 and go to Windows. Run for a couple of hours and see if this problem happens.

If you have system restore running, restore back to a point when you didnt have the problem

HP will not cover the repair if guaranty is expired.

Video card on your laptop is integrated on motherboard, and the repairman must replace the whole motherboard to fix it.

I quote : "Only half the screen works the rest is justa grey colouring." that is more likely a problem with the ribbon cable, connecting LCD, or with LCD screen itself, in some case , as said by the repairman , it can be the video card.
if the repairman did not open and inspected the laptop LCD display , connector and cables, then the problem it is probably the ribbon cable or the LCD panel.
The technician mentioned the motherboard, because that is the most expensive repair service, so that he can cover his back.

Ask a quote to a different technician, see if this can give you different quotes for all possible faults.

The possibilities are:

1 Replace ribbon cable

2 Replace LCD display

3 Replace motherboard.
