I had this similar problem with my dell inspiron 1200. The only way I could get it to read a CD was to apply a great deal of pressure to the drive (although it worked for me i would not recommend as this could damage your computer).
Also check to make sure all of your drivers are up to date.
Other than that I would suggest buying a new drive.

Could be a mechanical dialignment inside the unit.. Could be a Disc has jammed inside there before, or some kind insidents that make the tray not properly back in place..

First make a check if the tray is properly fixed or properly return into place..

Thank you, & please post back how things get done...

When I turn on the laptop says the dvice in the system modular bay can not be identified

Did you ever solve the non-recognition problem?

My C840 fails to recognize the/an extra HD in the modular bay, after I "overfilled(??)" it.

What to do to regain access to information stored on HD that the computer no longer recognizes? (Other components, including other HD's continue to work ok in the modular bay).

CD drive not found in XP

while booting up as soon as you see any writing in the top right hand corner, click F2 and enter setup
look for booting order, and make sure the cd rom is in the first place before boot from hard drive. save and exit and the reboot with the XP disk in the cd rom drive. Try a repair from disk or if you want to a total reinstall.
Another thing you might try is click on F8 on boot up and enter in Safe Mode, and see what is giving your the headache.

My dell insprion 1150 do not boot

BEFORE YOU REMOVE ANY DEVICES FROM YOUR COMPUTER REMOVE THE BATTERY AND AC ADAPTER.Pull the battery out and try using the ac only,if this works use a toothbrush and clean the contacts on the battery and the computer itself. You can also remove the memory and the cd rom plus the hard drive.see if it will power up with all these out.Last option with all these removed press and hold the power button down for twenty seconds.
Good luck

Cannot open the Options bay

On the front of the drive there should be a button. It is tiny. That is the 1st way to open it. 2nd if you do not have luck with that try looking for a small hole in the front of the drive. By inserting a paperclip or small precision screwdiver(like what you would find in an eye glass repair kit) gently insert it into the hole and it will eject the door.

I've got a Dell D600 Latitude laptop with a 6T980 CD drive. When I put the drive in the bay, it just keeps flashing the green light. If I re-start the computer, it asks me to make sure the drive is fully...

The promlem is the drive itself making proper contact, make sure the contacts on the back of the drive are not loose and free of dust.look inside as well if you have compress air try cleaning the contacts.Try again If no go you might want to try another drive.
Good luck

Inspiron 1150

without the windows xp installation cd there is not much you can do, but if you have it... you can do this.

REMEMBER: all this is considering you have a normal computer, with a normal system and your hardware is not damaged.
Your problem is very generic and the information you are providing is very poor...

boot with that installation cd
let windows xp installation start and when it prompts you to choose between installing or repairing by pressing "R" key, choose this second one and wait till the system shows you a black screen with some lines of white text on it.

you will be now able to write on that console DOS like... type this three commands and when the firsts two ask you, choose YES.

1. fixboot
2. fixmbr
3. chkdsk

the last one will check the hd and will tell you if you have problems in that hd... if it shows problems, after this, you should replace HD so...

after that just reboot your system and see if it works...
TIP: BOOT UP WITHOUT ANY THING BUT KEYBOARD AND MOUSE, disconnect printers, scanners, any usb dispositive, just keyboard and mouse...

if not give me more info on this please.
