Since you have one computer connected, try to go to linksys website. I think it is a problem with your IP adresses. If you connected your laptop and it is using the IP adress of one of the two computers, and you turn on one of your desktop, Maybe, there is one IP adress reserved and there is a conflict.
Only an hypothese...

I have a Linksys 5-port switch connected to a cox cable modem and I'm trying to use it to connect two computers at the same time. Only one works at a time and I have to reset the switch and modem to get...

Because the cox cable modem will only bind to one mac address (computer). You need to purchase a router, any router linksys, dlink, will do, get a wireless one so you can setup wifi as well. Plug your cox cable modem into the wan port on the router, plug your pc into one of the ethernet switch ports, you can use your web browser IE to login to the router and secure your wifi signal, power cycle your modem to make it bind to the new router. Most linksys dlink are programmed for a class c network, you could in theory put 254 devices, computers on your connection now.

5 port network hub

Connect the power supply.
connect the ethernet cable from your router (or the box that your isp gave you to get the internet connection) to the port labeled "Uplink" on the hub.
Connect the ethernet cable from your computer or another device to be connected to any of the ports 1 to 4. Do not use port 5 (that port is used to "chain" another hub)
Please be aware that a network hub is basically a very simple device that will not assign an internal ip number to your devices or computer, and if you have two or more devices or computers, you do need that either your "modem" (the device that is installed by your isp) is capable of handling more than one computer, or you will also need something to act as a router (your computer can do it, but you will need to know how to set up that).
Hope it helps

When I plug a cable into port 8 it will shutdown the switch

Your router supports a total of 8 connections. However, on the back there are 9 physical ports. Port 8 has two physical connectors where one (we will call it port 8a) is used to connect to a PC and the other (we will call that port 8b) is used as an uplink port. The uplink port (8b) cannot be used if something is pluged into 8a. If you are trying to use all 9 physical ports that is likely ther problem. If you need more than 8 devices connected to your switch get another 8 port switch (any brand will do) and connect the two switches via the UPLINK port with a 7 foot CAT-5 cable. Do not use a CAT-5 patch cable less then 7 feet long to connect two network devices together such as computer to switch or switch to switch as that will probably cause another problem with timing.

Another possibility is that the device at the end of port 8 has a malfunctioning network adapter. Try connecting a laptop to port 8a using a 7' CAT-5 cable. You may also want to try pluging the problem cable into another port as a way to test if the problem is somewhere along the cable run.

Want to have wireless with my Limksys Sr2016 switch

Go to: www.speedtest.net with a laptop on your network.

Find your speed. now repeat on same laptop plugged directly into the cable madem.

Do the settingsa change much?

If so, your network is at fault. If not, Comcast is lying to you.

How do I connect a LInksys NH1005 hub to a wireless router? Do I have to connect directly to the dsl modem first? change the ip address and then connect the router?

If you have a port in the back of the wireless router open which you should just run a CAT 5 (network cable) from the back of it to the Linksys hub. That should do it. This way the wireless router won't have to be messed with and you shouldn't have to change a thing.

Slow internet.

Your hub can support more that fiber optic puts out. Problem might be a slow computer. Run a internet speed test see what it gets through hub and then straight to the computer bypassing the hub. If possible. If there is a big difference either way what ever is slower is most likley the issue.

Lost connection between switch and hub - LED flashes every 5 secs

You say you have the same problem when you connect the cable directly from router to laptop, so it apparently is not a hub problem. That leaves the router and the cable. You're fortunate in having a working system on the other port. Why not try swapping pieces to see which is the failed piece? For example, what if you swap the ports for the cables? If it's a router problem, then the "bad" cable should work when in the other port. What if you swap cables? That would reveal a bad cable. Finally, swapping computers would show a computer configuration problem, such as the connection not being set to automatic.

Migrating from two netgear hubs to 3Com Baseline swithch:

to connect 2 computers without a hub/switch you need to have a cross-over cable. Normally a network cable only uses pins 1, 2, 3 and 4 with pairs 1,2 and 3, 6 on both ends. A x-over swaps the pairs on one end.

Go to a computer store near you and ask for one. Don't pay more than $10.

If you can't find one or it is expensive, let me know and I'll make an adapter for you and just charge around $5 for the parts and shipping. My email is fixya@pcsports.org and put "X-over Cable" as the subject.
