Question about CD & DVD Burners

Used USB 2GB stopped prematurely now needs to be formatted

Hello, My key had not finished writing to a Excel file when XP restarted.

Now the key wants to be reformatted? I have files on the key.

How can I get to the files without deleting them by reformatting the key?

Cheers, Jaymie

    Hey mate, thanks for the reply. I tried that and it only finds my working WD hard disk. This is where I have other files. But it is not my 3GB USB key, this does not show in the software I downloaded so I am unable to access the disc to recover files from it. Any other reccomendations. Cheers!

Alright Jaymie, you can get the information recovered for free with the program at the following website

http://www.top-shareware.net/recover_usb_drive_data.html

after doing this, you can then reformat the usb which should delete most if not all of your data. Please let me know if you have any questions about this or just need more help.

good luck

    For CHKDSK

    You need UAC enabled and admin privileges, then go to Start>Run>Cmd

    Then type "chkdsk" for need help, use the "chkdsk /?" (without quotes) for info.

    you can also go to my computer, right click on the drive, click properties, click on the Tools tab and then click Check Now

    Windows runs Chkdsk to make sure that there was no file resulting errors. This can turn stray pieces of files, or lost clusters, into file fragments for your review.

Good luck and kind regards.

    Hi again,

    have you tried Ajkill's suggestion of trying it in another PC?

  • Louie  Role

    Hi again Jaymie78,

    Let's recap:
    1. you have a flashdrive that became unformatted;
    2. being so it is now RAW and therefore CHKDSK will not work;
    3. you have tried several file recovery program (including GetDataBack?) and none worked; and
    4. you have tried the same flashdrive on other PCs and likewise cannot be accessed.

    From all appearances, the flashdrive is a goner (and unfortunately so are the files). Worst case scenario, you can try:
    a. Format the flashdrive. Of course the files will be erased but technically they are no longer there in the first place hence a recovery cannot be performed, and then immediately thereafter;
    b. do file recovery using bestdarngood's posted software or those that I have posted specially GetDataBack.

    Rationale: There is nothing to loose as they are already lost. By formatting, you are making the flashdrive readable. Using the file recovery software, there is still a chance that some of the files would be recovered even if the drive has been formatted. Of course this is at best a 50-50 chance since other than this (based on your post that none of the file recovery software works), nothing works.

Remove Write protection from DVD disc

1. Insert the DVD disc into the computer's DVD-ROM burner drive. Click on "Burn files to disc" from the window that automatically pops up.

2. Type a name for the DVD disc in the "Burn a Disc" box. Click "Show formatting options" and choose a formatting option.

3. Choose "Live File System" to allow files to be copied immediately to the DVD disc, much like sending data to a USB flash drive or floppy disk. Live File System discs can only be read by Windows XP or later versions. Choose "Mastered" to have files be copied to the DVD all at once. This is the standard burning method; discs can be played back on any DVD-ROM drive.

4. Click "Next" to prepare the disc. Files can now be copied to the disc using the selected method.

What dose this do

DVD burner or writer is a device where you can write a blank cd or dvd for data,music and videos format and also you can play or read your favorite cd or dvd mp3, audio cd and videos format. For burning you must have nero, alcohol and other burning application. In windows xp, vista and 7 are already included, simply drag your data or files you want to burn to you cdrom drive with blank cd or dvd.Then there is a button burn, click that button to write the files onto your cd or dvd. Have a nice day!

Hi ,
For video , use NERO Recode
For data , use NERO Burning Rom
If the issue persists , try using burning with another unit and compare the results . If you are still stuck , change software . If this still doesn't work , install Malwarebytes and make a full deep scan of your system ( http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html )
One of these solutions should help .
Best regards .

Why is a CD-RW a read only disc? I added folders

A CD-RW is like a school-room black-board.
You can write on the black-board, until it is full, using CD-writing software, not using 'File/Save' dialogues.

When the black-board is full, you "erase" the whole thing,
and start again. When the CD-RW is "full", use the CD-writing software to "erase" the complete disk.

That "someone" may be correct: there is a way ("packet-writing") that software can allow a pre-formatted CD-RW to be used as if it were an "ordinary" writable device, e.g., 3.5-inch diskette, or USB memory-stick.

Burn errors cant get drive to write

It looks like from error codes that yoi may have a hardware error, or a disk format problem, if this is only burning problem you have on pc and it worked before, then uninstall and reinstall Nero, info gathered from here,
http://www.isobuster.com/help.php?help=305
sense code 5 ASC 2c= 5 / 2C / 00 COMMAND SEQUENCE ERROR
5ASC2700=5 / 27 / 00 WRITE PROTECTED
Please give good rating if this helps you or points you in right direction, thanks

Can't read dvd ram disk

Well not all DVD Rom's are compatible for DVD Ram. Other problem would be the formatting. Windows XP Home and Professional can only write directly to FAT32-formatted DVD-RAM discs. For UDF-formatted discs, which are considered faster, compatible device drivers or software such as InCD or DLA are required. Windows Vista can natively access and write to both FAT32 and UDF-formatted DVD-RAM discs, however Windows Vista uses its own version of the UDF format giving compatibility problems. Vista also has issues with XP formatted FAT32 discs as Vista uses the CPRM features. Even though it is possible to use any file system one likes, only very few perform well on DVD-RAM. This is because some file systems frequently over-write data on the disc and the table of contents is contained at the start of the disc.

U30274 Burner hangs while writing DVDs

If it were the item you were trying to burn that causes the hanging, in other words a corrupt file, then that maybe the fault, but if it hangs with any other file your trying to burn, either your memory is being used up burning the files or you have a faulty burner, assuming you have tried different makes of dvd disks. Unless you have a dual processor, it's not wise using the pc for anything else at the same time.
