Hello, My key had not finished writing to a Excel file when XP restarted.

Now the key wants to be reformatted? I have files on the key.

How can I get to the files without deleting them by reformatting the key?

Cheers, Jaymie

- Hey mate, thanks for the reply. I tried that and it only finds my working WD hard disk. This is where I have other files. But it is not my 3GB USB key, this does not show in the software I downloaded so I am unable to access the disc to recover files from it. Any other reccomendations. Cheers!

Hi,

You can try file recovery utilities such as GetDataBack.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

- you can also try file recovery softwares from here, here or here.

Incidentally, if you are using a Mac, pls try here.

- Hi again,

have you tried Ajkill's suggestion of trying it in another PC?

May 23, 2008

- Hi again Jaymie78,

Let's recap:
1. you have a flashdrive that became unformatted;
2. being so it is now RAW and therefore CHKDSK will not work;
3. you have tried several file recovery program (including GetDataBack?) and none worked; and
4. you have tried the same flashdrive on other PCs and likewise cannot be accessed.

From all appearances, the flashdrive is a goner (and unfortunately so are the files). Worst case scenario, you can try:
a. Format the flashdrive. Of course the files will be erased but technically they are no longer there in the first place hence a recovery cannot be performed, and then immediately thereafter;
b. do file recovery using bestdarngood's posted software or those that I have posted specially GetDataBack.

Rationale: There is nothing to loose as they are already lost. By formatting, you are making the flashdrive readable. Using the file recovery software, there is still a chance that some of the files would be recovered even if the drive has been formatted. Of course this is at best a 50-50 chance since other than this (based on your post that none of the file recovery software works), nothing works.

Alright Jaymie, you can get the information recovered for free with the program at the following website

http://www.top-shareware.net/recover_usb_drive_data.html

after doing this, you can then reformat the usb which should delete most if not all of your data. Please let me know if you have any questions about this or just need more help.

good luck

- For CHKDSK

You need UAC enabled and admin privileges, then go to Start>Run>Cmd

Then type "chkdsk" for need help, use the "chkdsk /?" (without quotes) for info.

you can also go to my computer, right click on the drive, click properties, click on the Tools tab and then click Check Now

May 22, 2008

- Follow the instructions at the first link
http://www.z-a-recovery.com/unformat-tutorial.htm
and download the program at the second link
http://www.z-a-recovery.com/download.htm

This should recover the data when the CHKDSK has this error message

Let me know how it goes

- Windows runs Chkdsk to make sure that there was no file resulting errors. This can turn stray pieces of files, or lost clusters, into file fragments for your review.
