My IBM wheelwriter 30 is very old and i actually had never used it until now (it was my fathers) so far the spacebar and code key wont work...is there a diagnosis other then taking it apart...if not anyway i can do it without hiring someone?

Just go to the bottom of the page for "Typewriters" and choose your model. I believe the answer you are looking for is on page 3-25. I have looked at it myself. Here are the steps.

Always open the storage before making a revision.
- The store light must be on.
Pressing Store + the number (1 to 99) always opens storage at the beginning of a job.
If you play back too far or want to start over:
1. Press Play to stop playback
2. Press Store + the number (1 through 99)
3. Press Play. (Playback starts again at the beginning of the job.)

Use the Correction key to erase unwanted carrier returns from Stored job:
1. Press Play or Play+Spacebar until the carrier return playb
2. Press the correction key.

After making a revision hold down Play while you press and release the Spacebar several times to make sure the next few characters play back correctly.

When revising indented jobs, be sure to stop playback at the word or character you want to revise. Remember, you cannot use the Correction key to erase characters typed before you press Code+Tab or Code+Crtn. Therefore, if you play back too far, you may need to start playing back again from the beginning of the job.

Hold down the CODE key and press the s key to turn off sound.

There is a button or button combination to press to disable keystroke beeps, it will be in the operators manual.

You probably have a broken belt, you'll need a tech.

Remove the batteries and unplug for 30 seconds plug in and test. Unpluging and removing the batteries causes it to reset to defalt settings.

On the R. side of the keyboard is a key that says line bspace in green. Hold the code key and press that key the line space is indicated on the display.

Does the display show aP/W nomber other than 001?
If it does hold the code key,press and release the "L" key type 001 release the "L" key this sets the keyboard to U.S., if this works the cure is to replace the keyboard.

The delay print and justify are both on the far rt. of the keyboard pressing these keys turns the features off and on. if this dosen't do it you're keyboard is bad.

121 says that the keyboard is not supported which means that the K.B. is bad. To get around this hold the code key, press & relase the "L" key type 001 rel the code key this sets the T/W to a US keyboard. You will have to do this until you replace the keyboard or repair it see my tip under WW1000.

The old WW5 dose not have a bold function. To get bold you need a later machine any that print bold will say bold in green on the "B" key.
