Question about Sharp R-520LK Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Microwave sparking, etc.

Guru: Our microwave R-520 is doing similar, sparking from behind the metal plate on the side wall. The data plate says July 2007. I'm wondering how long the warranty is and should I let it spark and hum and generally raise h---? Some things it heats normally and other items it goes nuts.
Thanks,
Bill

I have the Sharp R-508F and had to replace the wave guide cover once along the way. it appears clean and fine. But, above it on the enamel, the paint appears to be burnt in the size of a nickel. So, it's ok to sand this and paint with special appliance paint? Seriously?

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck to the inside of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

It can be fragile, and the metal edges of the oven behind it can be sharp, so be careful!

The cover and the metal behind it should be cleaned with a mild, non-ammonia cleaner.

If the cavity metal of the oven is chipped or charred, it will have to be sanded smooth and clean and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If your waveguide cover is burned, it will need to be replaced.

Small metal-like plate against wall smokes when I try to use the microwave. Bought it last year. Afraid it will cause a fire so I don't use it. Pregnant with twins..need my microwave.

Shelley,
That is actually a mica plate and that can be replaced. I would suggest trying to find an appliance repair store near you and give them your make and model number of your microwave and they can probably order the part for you. Worst case scenario would be that you might have to order a piece larger than you need and you would have to trace out your old one onto the new one and cut it out yourself. It is not hard to do. What happens, is food grease gets splattered around during cooking, and it can get built up behind that plate and it will start to smoke after a while. You could try removing the plate and cleaning both sides real well, and if it has not charred the plate on either side, you might be able to get by with putting it back in. Hope this helps!

Sparks when cooking

Make sure no metal item (forks-spoons or oven rack) is touching the outer wall of the microwave. That will cause sparks. If all that is OK then there is usually a metal fan type blade in the microwave top called a stirrer blade that may be out of place and rubbing the cavity causing sparks. Try to pin point the spark area so you know where to look for the problem. Sparks usually mean metal is touching metal somewhere.

I have a Sharp Carousel Microwave R-1460A. The disk on the ceiling, opposite the warming plate and about the same size, has severe burn marks (probably from food splatters). Any idea what that part is

see this indication and fix it. God bless you
  1. Waveguide coverSparking and arcing in a microwave can be caused by a damaged waveguide cover. Try removing the waveguide cover to see if the problem persists. Once removed, the waveguide cover can be inspected for burns, which will indicate if this is the issue. If the waveguide cover is burnt or will not stay in the proper spot it will need to be replaced.
  2. Cavity/Rack supportIf sparking or arcing in your microwave is near a rack support, any exposed metallic area can be covered with a microwave cavity support. It is also recommended to replace the rack supports in this situation to ensure the issue is resolved.
  3. Cavity paintIf sparking or arcing in the microwave is visible on the side walls, the paint covering the metallic areas could have worn off or chipped. This can possibly cause pitting in the side walls or ceiling. If this is the case, it can be repaired with microwave cavity pain

Homestyles 0.9 cu.ft. Microwave Oven's shielding plate

yes you can but you should not. Take the shielding wall from another similar microwave if possible, the magnetron waves can seep thru the smallest crevasses and will repeatedly cause more damage if not fitted properly, im not so sure what type material is used but more than likely it is non conductive, careful magnetrons are dangerous thats why companies that make microwaves have such strict guidelines and safety measures, there are so many switches to prevent direct exposure to the magnetron, it is so dangerous the goverment developed a weapon from the technology--if your insist on repair please find exact replacement parts- careful and good luck more questions just ask

Microwave when turn on making a noise and sparks comin from fan area?

follow this steps and fix it. God bless you

Waveguide Cover

If the microwave is sparking or arcing the waveguide cover might be damaged and shorting out. Try removing the waveguide cover and see if the problem goes away. If there are any damaged spots in the microwave ceiling or sidewalls, repair them and paint them with microwave oven paint. Replace the waveguide cover if it is burnt or if it will not stay in place.

Microwave Oven Paint

If the microwave is sparking or arcing on the side walls the paint might have chipped causing pitting in the metal oven wall. Use microwave safe paint to touch up any bare metal spots.

Rack Support

If the microwave is sparking or arcing near one of the rack supports, remove the support, repaint any bare metal, install a new support.

I have a sharp carosel and tried to microwave bitter chocolate in it like many times before... it arched... I contacted Baker Chocolate and they said to put it in a bowl on a plate - did this many times;...

NEVER put anything metal in the microwave. If your chocolate was in aluminum foil no wonder it arced. That is very hard on the microwave.

If the metal were in PERFECT contact, then it would not arc, however that condition is unlikely. Just touching doesn't count... If it was welded and could not touch other metal or the walls, you MIIGHT get away with it.

When Baker told you to put it in a bowl, that MEANS the bare chocolate.

ALSO NEVER put bowls that have metalic trim as the trim will arc to itself.

Interior Light is out

Thanks for the info on locating a new one.

FYI - it's very difficult to locate the position of the bulb inside the oven! GE cleverly put it underneath a metal plate (left side), behind the plastic grill cover on the top/front of the unit. This means you have to uncrew about 6-8 screws to get to the bulb. THEN, you have to pull it out with a set of needlenose plyers, once you can dislodge it from the very tight space in which it rests (upside down?).

Thanks, GE, for making a simple task something extremely complicated and cost-centric in this day and age. I think the engineer that designed this over should be fired, if not shot at sunset.

I will NEVER buy another GE appliance. It has been my experience that they do not make their parts universal, nor do they make self-repairs practical, or cheap.

Sparks and Flames in my Kenmore 66561652100 Microwave

usually the only thing i'm aware of that will do that is if there is some kind of metal object in the microwave when you cook... even plates with thin painted metalic bands on the cause that affect.

remove the hook... place a container filled with water inside the microwave for about a minute to aid in cleaning... and examine the hook for any metal.

Microwave sparks

Quite often this is due to grease or food particles stuck to the inside of the oven or stuck on or behind the waveguide cover.

The waveguide cover is usually about the size of a playing card and often held in place by a plastic rivet.

It provides important protection for the magnetron.
