Question about Tascam US-144 Sound Card

Crashing every minute

Hey, I'm using Ableton Live, had an update, PC's powerful, everything else fine etc etc but when I use the Tascam US-144 with Live every so often it'll just crash for no reason. So I take the USB out of the card, put it back in again and it works. 1 minute later the same thing will happen again and again again. I've got all the updates.

There has been rare days when no crashing at all occurs but this is once in a blue moon. The next time I try it it's completely unusable again.

Any help appreciated

I have a pentium 4, with 1/2 gig ram Tascam us144 erratic freezing regardless what app is used.
Upgraded firmware and drivers for tascam and software, disabled other sound card, disabled network, reintalled xp and only the minimum software for running music. Tryed asio, asio4all, asio full duplex, and Live's built in driver. Machine locks up and must be reset with hard switch. What is the research with ram. I have 1/2 gig will upgradeing ram to minimum of 1 gig definatley solve the problem or not? Can you create some kind of swap file to help?

This TASCAM 144 is a piece of junk! DO NOT BUY!!

At normal latency setting the Driver uses 16% - 20% CPU when idle. Low latency will take you up to at least 35%!! Unreal, UN-USEABLE!!!

Make double sure write cache is disabled on your HDD's. The TASCAM driver will lock up your computer and only recourse is to power down--doing this with windows write cache on can and eventually will spell disaster.

TASCAM preamps sound poopy on this thing. But I purchased for use with software synthesizers and digital out to primary recording computer, you'd think this would be an awesome setup, but no thanks to TASCAM I've been in a holding pattern for about month now.

I am purchasing another unit and will never buy TASCAM again.

Hey TASCAM, how's that Recession feeling baby? You keep treating people like this and you'll go down with the rest of them.

I have found that the tascam 144 freezes the system evan when using other software than Live. It looks up with Cubase and other stuff evan Windows media player running sound thru the tascam. The problem is erratic and acts like an IRQ conflict and I still believe Tascam has fallen real sort of the mark by abandoning the customers. They are without a dought responsible for this problem and should step up and FIX it NOW. We are many having problems it is no fluke and I for one am discusseded with the total lack of support for what they have released as a viable and workable unit. LIES just to sell their stuff. I feel that Tascam's support should be in on this forum and start to work out the diffinative answere.

Anyone want to buy a cheap Tascam US 144 that won't do what you want. I achive move by plugging into the MIC or Line in on my system sound card than I get from the great Tascam device I bought in good faith and can't use.

THANKS FOR NOTHING TASCAM.

    PS to previouse post.

I sent all the info I could on this subjest to tascam and asked for advice and have been totally ignored. I guess they have their money and the deal is closed> Thus the reason for my angry words and at this point I have no reason to recant my words.

Umm, does Live even work with 1/2 Gig RAM? I have 2GB RAM and dependending on the project Live can still be very slow ...
I'd really recommend upgrading to at least 2GB.

Us-144 working only on high latency!

Even my q6600 clocked at 3.6 Ghz gives me 12ms latency. It turns out the tascam highest latency is 12ms also on my p3 3.0 ghz pc. I haven't tried the tascam on my q6600 - I use an Emu 1820m on that. But try testing the tascam on a really fast computer. It's probably your dell's middling motherboard that's the slow down as well as all the extra stuff installed on dell's and especially notebooks that are robbing the usb bus of it's bandwidth. In most cases with the tascam, it's the pc or a low latency setting. If you want a great card for serious work: The EMU 1616m pcmcia card is a great card! Even SoundonSound loves them. Emu just makes great soundcards that rival any card out there for the best prices. Emu also gives the most control via it's excellent PatchMix software, but Patchmix does require an average IQ and about 10 minutes of reading.

Cannot install TASCAM US 144 driver

Go to device manager and verify that the ports are powered. Windows has as a default that if no USB is detected after a prescribed time, that they be powered down. (Without notification, I might add!) I would then change the parameters to where they are manually turned off and on to help the situation...accordianman

Tascam us 144 sync problems with cubase le

Hey lea,

i have a similar setup (Cubase LE & Tascam 144) and each time i start up Cubase i have to make sure there is no digital input going to the tascam. once cubase is started up but no project loaded i plug in my spdif from my DAT machine and then open my project and all is fine. does that answer part of your question?

i have a different problem though, i'm trying to record my DAT tapes which are recorded at 32khz and cubase doesn't recognize that sample rate properly. it'll record no problem, and play them back fine, but exporting always creates mismatched sample rates in the exported file. sucks big time and i have got no idea on how to fix it either.

you might want to downgrade to xp because vista uses alot of ram to run it. you could also get more ram. you need about 1gb and a half to 2 gigs to run most recording softwares and interfaces. i personally use vista cause i lost my xp disk and i got 2 gbs of ram and everything runs great, but if you really want to get into recording do what im doing and save up and buy a mac.
