I had this problem and it had to be returned (It was still under warranty), it was completely broken. It could also be an old battery, in which case you could try replacing the battery. If you get your money back, don't get another sansa, get an iriver or something along those lines, so much better, and last for ages.
Try resetting your firmware via Sandisk's support site. If it still doesn't work, your sansa's mainboard might be busted. The cost of replacing it will be more than a refurbished one (under $40 online).
i have the same problem....i am currently trying to get mine fixed. Sandisk told me to take a picture of the broken mp3 player and send it to email@example.com, i have sent it to them 8 times within the past 2 months and they still said they have not recieved it. let me know if you find anything out...
