Question about Thorens TD-170 Turntable

Turntable must be started by hand

When I throw the switch to start, nothing happens and I must revolve the platter by hand to get the machine working. Doing this also causes the tone arm to travel about 85% the way through its travel. The machine was purchased new about seven years ago and has been used infrequently.

There is only one place for Thorens repair that I trust. Classicthorens.com. Trained and mentored by the original swiss technicians on the correct Thorens specifications and traditional procedures, their company. STS Turntables is hands down the worlds best.

This sounds like the stepper motor that drives the turntable is failing. Are there any good DJ shops near to you?

Why did it stop revolving?

The driving element, be it belt or rubber puck, may have failed. It's not an unusual failure in a turntable that is several years old and rarely used.

I recently took my turntable out of the box after being in there for years because someone wanted to buy it, but it dose not work.

If the turntable is a belt drive, most likely the belt has probably disintegrated due to ozone contamination over time and must be replaced if this is the case. Once you have the platter off you can see the spindle that drives the platter to see if it is moving.

Arm not working. Stop/start light flashes red instead of staying solid

Don't try and force anything that won't move. Try this. With the power unplugged, place the tonearm over the record, if it will move freely, while rotating the platter by hand. Move the tonearm slowly over the surface of the platter until the end. Continue turning the platter by hand and see if the tonearm picks up and returns to the rest. See if that fixes your issue. Received a Numark TT usb back in 2007. Just plugged it in for the first time ever. Installed EZ Converter on my powerbook, was all psyched to get going. The turntable powers on, but nothing happens when I...

Try moving the tone arm lever to raise the arm, if it has one.(MAKE SURE YOU HAVE RELEASED THE ARM CLIP!) Then with the arm raised move the arm over towards the platter. If platter still doesn't rotate, and its a belt drive, A. The belt is bad. or B. The belt has come off the platter or motor pulley.

How do I remove the turntable platter from the ion ittusb05 turntable?. The belt is dislodged and the platter will not revolve.

Lift the rubber mat off the platter and notice the two large holes for your fingers to fit into. Simply lift the platter off the base by pulling.

JVC - problem. The turntable does not move,

Most modern day turntables are semi-automatic. You move the tonearm from the rest post
over to the record and the platter will start turning. There is a small microswitch inside
either below the arm base or near. There should be a flat bar connected to the base of the arm
and this will actuate the microswitch. The switch is wired in series to the rotation motor.

Solution: 1. Obviously verify the belt is on. Take off the rubber mat and rotate the platter.
The rotation motor is on the left and it has a small brass spindle. The belt should
be visable through the holes in the platter. If not pull the platter gently up, there will
be some resistance. The belt wraps around a smaller inner ring on the underside
of the platter and the rotation motor spindle. If it is degraded it will be stuck to the
platter or fall apart. Generally there 3 common sizes. ( 21.4 / 23.6 / 25 inch) they
readily available on E-Bay, search term "turntable belt".
2. Obviously check power.
3. Check the microswitch, it should "click", verify with ohm meter.
4. Some turntables have a "cut" or stop function. The arm must return first to rest before
starting again, again the microswitch is the trigger.

Stanton ST150 turntable won't spin

Hello DeKay,

I just had a spindle lock issue this past Sunday at my gig. I had the turntables out in my car and brought them in. I let then warm up for 2hrs before plugging them in.

Everything was good. Then mid set my right side turntable started spinning really fast and then DEAD STOP.

I was pushing the platter and it really hard to turn. I took off the platter and tried to turn it with my hand. It was dead locked, WTF?!!

So I limped through with one turntables since I use Traktor Scratch Pro and made it through the whole night successfully.

I searched the net and it was suggested to lubricate the 1200 spindle with 15W40 motor oil. Since the motor design is indentical, I picked up some 10W40 motor oil since I couldn't find 15W40.

I oiled both turntables to be on the safe since. I tapped the spindle on the locked turntable to help loosen it.

I drove back home which is pretty much an hour drive and let the tables sit for another 2 hrs.

I decided to grab a thick towel and vice grips to work on the locked spindle.

Clamping down on the towel with the vice grips on the brass fitting for the platter I was able to free the spindle quite easily.

I was then able to turn it by hands so I did in both forward and reverse directions to work the oil down into the spindle bearings.

I put the platter back on and spun it manually to check for resistance, it was spinning nicely!

Plugged in the turntable, set the pitch at 0 and watched the stobe dots. There was no waver in the strobe dots. YAAAAAAAY!

My turntable is back to new and since I only use them on the road they stay stored most of the time.

So I would suggest just oiling the spindles every so often to keep them tip top.

Hope this helps you!

Peace,
DJ Quartz

Technics sl 1210 will not start up

did you ever open the turntable. It sounds like the on/off switch is bad. Remove the platter and screws with a phillips screw driver and just make sure the connections are in place. make sure you disconnect the power first. let me know what happens afterwards.

One ov my decks (same Gemini PT-1000 II) had the same problem. Just open it and clean the micro switches underneath the big buttons. It worked fine for me.
