Changing the default speakers to headphones worked for me... though it's not perfect. When I unplugged my headphones replugged them during a song, it didn't work anymore.
From the Control Panel:
Click on Hardware and Sound
Click on Sound
Set as Default

Re: No sound when headphones cabel is into laptop
If you are using Windows Vista, the solution might be that you have to go into your control settings, and set your headphones as your default speakers. This is a one-time deal, and once you do it once, then your computer should auto detect when you are using them after this.
a 6ya Technician can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repair professionals here in the US. click here to Talk to a Technician (only for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need. Goodluck!

Perhaps your (cable) headphone is grounded or you may perhaps inserted it to the wrong ports, try other headphones or speakers and let's see what will happen. If the same problem occurs, the ports from your laptop is grounded itself.
It sounds like you're asking whether headphones are necessary to the Skype experience.
You don't absolutely *need* headphones (or a microphone or a headset that has both), but if you don't use headphones, then your Mac external microphone might pick up the sound of your conversation and you might get unpleasant levels of feedback.
If this doesn't answer your question, please write back with the following information:
1. Your Skype version (click Skype --> About Skype) 2. Your model of Mac 3. Whether you are having problems with your audio - On Skype only? - On other applications? - In general? 4. Whether you have tried clicking on "Skype Test Call" - Whether you could hear the voice giving you instructions
if you are able to hear normally from the speakers and not from the headphones possible reasons could be: the audio is muted or very low there is a mute switch on the headphone that is turned on the headphone is not firmly plugged in or is in the wrong site eg microphone hope it helps please inform if it helps..
Its very general problem which is faced by most please do these things when you are on chat with your friend please keep your speakers on mute option. or the other thing is remove your external speakers from you laptop when you are on chat with your friends. its does not affecting your privacy
