"Cancel Parental Controls" keeps popping up? or it keeps asking for a password to go to sites? Either way, you can disable parental controls in the AOL software preferences. For instructions, please see; http://help.channels.aol.com/kjump.adp?articleId=218163

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

After the tv is tuned to a new channel, a black square appears over the majority of the screen. The Direct TV tech said that it was a parental control feature that needed to be reset

Actually, your TV's closed-captioning is turned on and it's set to "text" mode. This causes the set to blank out the area where the text would go if there was any. Most remote controls have a single button to turn captioning on, so it's easy to get into this mode without knowing it. Press that button or use the TV menu to go through the caption settings to turn them off, and the box should go away. (Parental controls don't just blank out a part of the screen; they disable the channel completely. I hate it when a technician won't say "I don't know" and then gives out wrong information.)

I think i did something with the meun button there is a black square in my picture. how do you get the set lock code off thats what i think thanks

You have turned on the closed captioning in text mode. Navigate the menus to get to the section that controls closed captioning and turn it off.

That should resolve the problem.

Closed captioning is activated. HOw do I cancel it WITHOUT remote

Unfortunately, many sets these days do not allow you to access the closed captioning options without a remote. The good news is that universal remotes do and they are relatively cheap. When you look for a universal remote, be sure that it has a menu button on it. Expect to pay between $5-$7 for one.

Computer remains in sleep mode to conserve electricity

This is a known issue in Vista. Computers going into hibernation and then not waking up. I believe it was fixed with the Service Pack 1 distribution, but I'm not 100% certain.
I would recommend that you go into the power options from the control panel and disable hibernation. You can tell the computer to turn off the monitor and the hard drive after a period of time, but just don't leave hibernation enabled.
