Question about Mitsubishi VS-50705 50" Rear Projection Television

Mitsubishi VS-50705 convergence problem.

Becoming more prevelant my convergence seems to split and you see red, blue and green ghosts around objects and peoples heads. It goes in and out. When out I have no convergence adjustments. When in I do. I have a service manual and some electronics knowledge and have been looking around the IC801,2,3 and amp chips area. Somebody already responded to soldier around the amp chips and if doesn't fix try replacing the amps and resistors. Does anybody have more specifics on which resistors and which amps or just tinker around the general area the paths follow described in the service manual?

You should just replace all of the resistors and ICs in the convergence circuitry since you have it open anyway. They are cheap and easy to replace. You can buy them from an electronics store like Radio Shack. The soldering around the amp chips is right, looked for cracked connections since your convergence goes in and out, it seems that the connection is just loose. If you have the service manual it should make your life much easier. Do you use a surge protector for this tv as that might help keep this problem from happening too.

Please update me on this situation and let me know of any other questions you may have

good luck

Usually the capacitors will be around the convergence IC's near the heatt sinks. It should be easy to spot the busted capacitors, their tops will be bulging. Here is a sample pic:
Mitsubishi VS-50705 convergence problem. - 9a88595.jpg
Check the specifications of the faulty capacitors, and get the replacements from your local electronics shop. If you are comfortable with this, you can use a pair of needle nose pliers to G-E-N-T-L-Y pull out the defunct capacitors. Once that is done, solder in the new capacitors carefully. If are unsure how to do this, try to get a friend who knows how to do this kinda stuff do it for you. The capacitors are usually 680 - 1000 micro farad and 35V. however, if you dont find 35V, you could use a 50V as well. They will be slightly larger, but you should be able to get them to fit in.

HERE is a clear step by step procedure with pictures.
If your TV is still under warranty, then the best thing to do would be to take it back to the shop and get a replacement.

You will most likely have to replace both convergence IC's as well.

You want to replace the convergence ICs. These are STKxxx chips and are large and attached to heat sinks. These should run about $25-$35 each. There will be 2 of them. Once these arereplaced, check the "feeder" resistors for them. They will be in line with the power supply lines.

I have a Mitsubishi Rear Projection tv (vs-50705). The picture shows a concave image on the top and bottom of screen and the edges go off the screen. I have red blue and green ghost images on the screen...

Well, you did the right first step. However, when the convergence outputs toast up they sometimes cause other problems. First would be the fuses that supply them voltage. These are pico fuses back in the power supply. Second would be open supply resistors that have opened up because of the excessive current draw caused by the whacked out convergence amps. When changing the outputs doesn't solve the problem it takes the repair out of the realm of the do-it-yourselfer. My recommendation is to let a professional take over.

Cannot adjust convergence

Projection TV sets have two very common problems listed below.

Problem #1) Convergence

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

First thing a tech would do is solder around Convergence amps then check to see if you can align by menu then if can not. Change amps and maybe resistors.

One of your convergence IC's has either cracked loose or burned out. The IC will have to be resoldered or replaced and then the convergence circuits realigned. If you do not have experience in repairing convergence circuits then have a qualified tech handle it for you. This is by far the most common failure in the projection sets and a good tech can have it fixed in about an hour and a half. I charge $150 for that but shops in your area will vary, so call around.
