No, I can't delete them either. By "Ghosts" I mean that there appear to be e-mails in my inbox (31 of them) but when I try to open them, nothing happens. Let me re-state how I think the problem arose: I asked Gmail to activate Mail Fetcher so that e-mails into my #2 account go to the # 1 a/c. It appeared to do so, and placed those 31 e-mails in the #1 a/c in box. But back in the #2 a/c, there is no mail at all, not in any of the mail boxes.

When someone sends me an e-mail just as you did, to grierson11@gmail.com (my #1 a/c) they come through in the usual way, and the inbox then indicates that I have mails numbered from 32 upwards. These, I open and read, and when I have done so, the inbox goes back to 31 and stays there. I can't open them, and there does not appear to be any way to clear them out. Any other info you need? Thanks

I am not angry at you guys - just not aware that it takes you so long to respond. Of course I asked Google - but have you ever tried getting someone from Google to respond? They bump you to discussion forums which is useless. The reason I went to you is that I thought you could help where Google can't. I don't understand the difference between offline and online e-mail by the way - it is all web-based. I check my mail by logging on to my Gmail account and clicking on my Inbox. Never mind. I tried. Thanks and goodbye.

  • JGCARMELIN Jun 08, 2008

I repeat that I am not taking it out on you or anyone else. I have not rated your responses and actually I am now coming to resent your whole attitude. There is nothing on your site to warn me or anyone else that you can't solve online e-mail questions, so don't dump on me for asking a question. Over and out, goodbye, have a nice life.

  • JGCARMELIN Jun 08, 2008

Understood - and given the relationship between Fixya and people like yourself was not made clear, you have nothing to apologise for at all. As your advice is free, I applaud you for trying, and thanks for doing so. I will just make sure that I don't go anywhere near Fixya again.

Could you clarify a bit, please? When you say "ghost email", do you mean that you delete emails in Gmail and they're still appearing in your Inbox?

Is this online or offline e-mail? Sounds like a problem within GMAIL. Did you ask them the question? After all it is their software. Could be some kind of spyware or virus. You sound angry at the people here and we did not write the program. How are you checking your mail?

Online e-mail is what you have. Google is the only company that can solve this. Since we do not work for google, we can't do anything for you. They should have a tech support somewhere. The e-mail is on a server and someone has to maintain it. I know that this is making you mad, but please do not take it out on us. You are making our ratings go down on a question that we can't solve to begin with.

  • T&N Family Electronics Dean and Sherrie Terrell

This is not my site. I have no control over what the site offers. I tried to help you,for free. I thought that since you got a raw deal when you paid that you deserved any free advice that I could try to give. I was not the original person that tried to help you.
I you have a problem with the charge that the Fixya company charged you. You deserve to get your money back. There is a contact link at the bottem of this page to contact the company. I do not work at the company. I am just a person offering free advice. I do get paid if I help someone that pays for my advice. I just do not want you getting mad at me. I feel like a person trying to pick you up after someone else knocked you down.

How to Safeguard and Protect Your Email Addresses from Spam?

Tired of receiving spam emailsin your Inbox? Wasted too much time identifying and trying to blockspam emails? Don’t grieve. Here’s how you can secure your personal email addresses from spam and unsolicited bulk emails (UBE).secure-email.jpg

email-sign.jpgConfuse the Spam Bots
One of the oldest tricks is not to post your email address in“plain” form online. Instead, you can disguise your email address bytyping it in a knotty way so that humans can still read and understandit, but bots cannot. For example, instead of writing “eric@gmail.com”,use “eric AT gmail DOT com”.
Use Disposable Email Address
There are many times when you need to sign up for a site whichrequires that you provide an e-mail address to send a validation e-mailto. Instead of giving your personal email address (and get spammedlater), try using a disposable emails, which by the way, are free.
Few of these which we find very useful and user-friendly can befound at 10minutemail.com, www.mintemail.com and www.guerrillamail.com.All these sites will give you a temporary e-mail address. Any e-mailssent to that address will show up automatically on the web page. Youcan read them, click on links, and even reply to them. The e-mailaddress will expire after a certain period of time, usually more thansufficient for the intended purpose.
yahoo-mail-logo.gifFancy a permanent disposable email instead? Then get it from Yahoo!AddressGuard which is part of Yahoo! Mail. It lets you createdisposable email addresses to use whenever you don’t want to give outyour real Yahoo! Mail address, but when you do think you’ll probablywant to receive what this source sends you—a receipt, or an invoice, orsome other valid communication. You can create many alternate addressesand access them all from your Yahoo! Mail account. If any of yourdisposable addresses starts getting spam, just delete that address. It’s that simple!
Never Respond to a Spam
If you receive an unsolicited bulk email (UBE) and suspect it’s aspam, never ever respond to it. Do not fall prey by clicking on theUnsubscribe link as this will only verified that your email address isindeed genuine! Just ignore these emails and trash them.
Identify Your Spammer Source (for Gmail users only)
Many of us might not know that, by adding a plus sign (+) and afilter tag to your own Gmail address, you can track which of the sitesthat you’ve given your address to are selling your email addresses tospammer on the net! To do this, just use the plus and tag every timeyou enter your address into an online form. The trick is to use thename of the site you’re visiting as the tag, so it’s easier to tracklater on.
gmail-logo.jpgSoif you are buying something from ABC.com, enter your email address asusername+ABC@gmail.com. Gmail will ignore the plus sign and everythingthat comes after it, so messages sent to that address will still maketheir way to you. But if that site sells your address to spammers, youcan easily identify it by looking at the Sent To address in the header. When this happens, you can use Gmail’s Create a Filter settings toblock and direct all future emails to Trash automatically.

How to keep a check on Email Spam?

Step 1: Set up "filters" in your Gmail account to automatically delete junk mail from specific senders. While spammers tend to change their email addresses frequently, you will sometimes get repeated spam messages from the same sender. Go into your "Settings," click "Filters," and set up a filter that automatically deletes all incoming emails from the sender.

Step 2: If you are getting junk mail from the same company, but the return address keeps changing, create a filter to delete the emails by detecting certain words. For example, maybe the company is called Global Moneymaking Enterprises. Create a filter that catches all emails that contain those three words and set it to delete them automatically.

Step 3: Rather than deleting junk emails that make it into your Gmail inbox, select them and click the "Report Spam" button. This will move the message into your spam folder, but it will also give Google information to help it improve its spam filter.

Step 4: Set up a special Gmail address that you use for making purchases, signing up for newsletters, and doing other activities that require you to give out your email address. Sometimes companies will opt you into promotional offers or sell your email address to spammers. Block this mail from coming to your main Gmail account by protecting that address and only giving out your special account address.

Step 5: If you notice a lot of junk emails in your spam folder that contain certain words, set up a filter to screen out emails with those words. Terms such as Viagra are common, but spammers often change them around to defeat spam filters, However, many of these changes are used frequently. For example, many spammers use the same Vi@gara misspelling. When you notice this, block those terms and you won't even get their messages in your Gmail spam folder.

Cannot get my messages from gmail on both my phone and computer ...messages only go to my phone ...need to have them go to both !!...What to do???

Go to Gmail on the computer, click the Settings icon on the upper right that looks like a gear, click Settings, click "Forwarding and POP/IMAP", click "Add a forwarding address" and enter an email address already on the computer. If there isn't one, the same area of the Settings menu will let you save emails to the Gmail Inbox, if you're using POP email. That way you can open Gmail rather than an email client and the previously read emails will still be available.

Gmail access

You can combine multiple Gmail accounts into a single, primary Gmail account by using the POP3 Mail Fetcher application built into Gmail.
The Mail Fetcher enables you to retrieve email from POP3 email accounts, including Gmail, and send mail as if from a different email address all from within your primary Gmail account. Configure your primary account to manage your other Gmail accounts with the Mail Fetcher.

Sign in to the Gmail account that you want to use to manage your Gmail accounts.
Click the "Settings" icon, represented by a gear cog, in the top left and click "Mail Settings."

Click the "Accounts and Import" tab.
Click the "Add POP3 Email Account" button.
Enter the email address of your secondary email account and then click "Next Step."
Enter the password of your secondary email account and then click "Add Account."
Click the radio button beside "Yes, I want to be able to send email as
[SECONDARY EMAIL ADDRESS]" and then click "Next Step."

Enter the display name for your secondary email address and then click "Next Step."
Click "Send Verification" and then check your secondary email account.
Click the link contained in the verification email to confirm the integration of that account with your primary Gmail account.
All mail sent to your secondary Gmail is now delivered to your primary account, and when responding your secondary Gmail address is displayed in the From section of the email.

Using Gmail as your Universal Inbox

Nowadays most people have more than one email account. If one of yours is a Gmail account, you can use it as your primary inbox to check all your POP3 accounts in your Gmail browser window. But do remember that you can check only other POP3 accounts only. You won’t be able to check Yahoo mail, Windows Live Hotmail, or other such web mail accounts. Also, not all POP3 servers work with Gmail.
Here is what you need to do. Open your Gmail account and click Settings-Accounts. In the ‘Get mail from other accounts‘ section, click Add another mail account. Enter the email address of the account you want to add, and click Next Step.
Enter your username, password and POP3 server. If you want to continue to access the account through a mail client or through the ISP’s own Web interface, in addition to picking up and sending mail in your Gmail account, check Leave a copy of retrieved message on the server. This allows you to read the mail in Gmail, but the mail will remain on the ISP’s server so that you can download it with your standard mail program or read it through the account’s own Web interface. On the other hand, if you plan on accessing the mail for the address only through your Gmail account, you can leave the box unchecked.
Next, check Always use a secure connection (SSL) when retrieving mail to keep mail snoops at bay. In some instances a POP3 account may not work with an SSL connection: if that is the case, you will have to leave this box unchecked.
If you want all of your incoming messages from the account to carry a label, such as the name of the account, select Label incoming messages. In Gmail, a label works much as a folder does. You can view all mail that carries the same label by clicking the label. Gmail automatically creates a label for the address of the new account. You can select a different label or create a new one by choosing the appropriate entry from the drop-down list. Another option is to have messages bypass your inbox and go straight to your Gmail archive. This would be a good choice if you want to use Gmail primarily for searching through mail. When you’ve made all your selections, click Add Account.
You can compose mail in Gmail and have it appear to the recipient as if it were from the account you just added. When a message appears asking whether you want to create a custom From address, click Yes and follow the instructions.
Gmail will check your account, and any mail sent to either address will appear in your Gmail inbox. To stop Gmail from checking the mail, click Settings-Accounts and choose delete next to the account.
