Re: remote cotrol does not work except in close range.
Clean both red filter plastic windows, 1 at the remote control end and 1 at the tvs InfraRed receiver end, with window cleaner on a soft cloth. If this doesnt work you need to confirm operation with another working remote. Either the transmitter(remote) or receiver (tv) could be faulty.
Anything obstructing the IR path to the receiver located at the bottom edge of the tv bezel?

Most likely the problem is with the remote. The infrared LED transmitter in the remote could be weak. If the remote only works when it is close to the TV then it is faulty. Try replacing the batteries first, the maybe flat. When you replace them and you still have trouble operating the TV and it only works at close range then you can purchase an infrared LED transmitter form an electronics parts store and replace the this LED in the remote. NOTE the LED is a polarised device and only work if inserted correctly. The LED will have a small flat surface on the rim of the LED next to the shorter leg wire is the K (cathode) - lead, the longer leg wire is the A (anode) + lead. Make sure it is fitted to the circuit board the right way around before you solder the LED to the circuit board.
I see that it does have RCA input (Yellow, white, red) on the reverse of the TV. Connect the DVD via RCA cable to the corresponding color connection, place the TV in "Vido" or "aux" mode. this is usually done on the remote from an "input" button, or it can also be called "game," "video," or "aux."
Upon putting it to this after connection of the DVD player, you should see the DVD players home screen. You should be set to enjoy the DVD player.
