speakers were outdoor, and over time the volume had to keep going up to render any sound as the speakers became unusable.  the speakers were replaced with new ones, but I cannot reset the unit from the "Protect" mode. any suggestions at this point?

Disc 1 of a set CD will suddenly stop playing and "PROTECT" appears.

Another Disc 2 of the same set will play through.

Have you connected an extra pair of speakers?. (Thereby loading the amp stage beyond it's capacity)
Are the speakers connected to the unit the original ones the system came with or different? ( Speaker impedance, usually displayed at the back of the speaker cabinet must not be less than amp's specifications....6 ohms, 8 ohms)
If you're driving the unit excessively you're lucky this piece is equipped with protect mode, else your speakers and amp would have been fried by now.
One last possibility comes to mind: High volume causes vibration causing loosely fitted mains plug to rattle in wall socket calling "protect" due to improper feed voltage. Move the unit to another wall socket and ensure a tight fit into mains receptacle.

I was playing some music pretty loud today on my Sony STR-DB790 and then no bang no crackling just strait to protect mode turned stereo off thinking nothing of it and now every time I turn it on strait to...

There is an output load causing the protect to engage, turn unit off and dis-connect the speaker wires from the back of the receiver, this will reset the processor ic. Now power on and turn volume right down, if the word protect stays off it means there is a short in the wires or one or more of the speakers. But if the word protect comes on with the "speakers and wires dis-connected" it indicates a short in one or more audio output ic's and will need a tech to address the extent of damage and cost.

Yes I have a problem with my sony str de 525 receiver its stuck on Protecter every time i turn in on it flashes protecter and i cant get it to stop what do i do

Disconnect the speaker wires from the rear panel, turn the volume down, and see if the receiver still goes into protect when you turn it on. If it doesn't, you need to check your speakers and wiring. You may have a speaker that's gone bad, or a wire that's shorted. Likely causes are too much insulation removed when you stripped the ends and now they are touching, the wire's been pierced by a mounting nail or staple, or it's been damaged somehow.

If the receiver still goes into protection with no speaker load, it's the receiver at fault. I have seen this problem caused by bad solder connections on several areas, bad components in the power supply, and trouble in the amplifier section.

I can't point you toward any specific "most likely" cause, but the bad soldering is something you can check by eye. Any other cause is probably going to require service by a technician who has the test equipment and service information to do more in-depth troubleshooting.

Good luck, and thanks for using Fixya!

"Protect" Flashing

In all likelyhood, one or more output transistors have failed. Please confirm your model as STR-DE335 and I'll post the probable parts that need to be checked.

My sony str-d1o15 says protector

I got this from Sony site, I am doing it to mine now, unplugged it first.
Follow the steps below to troubleshoot if the word PROTECT or PROTECTOR is flashing on the A/V receivers display.
  1. Check the speaker wires and speakers for proper connections.
  2. Reduce the volume level. IMPORTANT: If the receiver is played back at maximum volume level it may enter the protect mode. Maximum volume listening will cause the receiver to run very hot and may drain the output capacitors.
  3. Disable the surround sound option if both the A and B speakers are being used simultaneously.
  4. Ensure the top of the receiver has proper ventilation to keep it from overheating.
  5. If the message only occurs when using a DVD player, the sampling frequency may be set too high. IMPORTANT: Some receivers provide compatibility with the higher sampling frequencies through alternate connections. Consult the owners manual for specific information.
  6. Unplug the AC power cord for about 1 to 2 hours to reset the output transformers.
If the issue is still unresolved, service may be required. The Sony® eService Web site at http://eservice.sony.com/ can assist you in obtaining service from a Sony Service Center or locating a Sony Authorized Servicer.
