Question about Canon PowerShot S5 IS Digital Camera

Flash not working

My flash is not working. I tried manual and auto settings, to no avail. I get a blinking red camera icon in lower left corner of display when trying to shoot -- not sure if that's related or not.

I think your problem is that you are not flipping open the flash... the flash doesnt automatically flip open... and the blinking red icon in the lower left just means that since there isnt enough light, the camera will spend a bit longer to allow more light to enter the lens, hence you need to keep the camera steady and not shake it... hope this helped

How di I manually pop open the flash

Press the OPEN (flash) button.
This button is on the side of the camera just below the flash.

The flash mode button (lightning icon) is at the lower left on the rear of the camera.
This only changes settings when the flash is up.
This cycles through Auto, red-eye reduction, forced flash and no flash.
The mode shows in the finder or the LCD screen.
AUTO mode does not show.

When i press flash icon the display says "not available in these settings"

The flash is not available in certain exposure modes. The camera decides whether to use the flash in Auto mode, and the flash cannot be used in Landscape mode, for two examples.

Try switching the camera to the Manual exposure mode. Can you use the flash then?

How do I disable the pop-up flash on Nikon D5000? Thanks

As long as jog dial is set to M or manual, the flash will not pop up automatically. Be reminded though because you have to set everything manually. If you want the auto settings without the flash, set the jog dial to the icon that looks like a lightning with stop/ no sign

Canon IXUS 80IS - I can't turn the flash on

When this camera is in "Auto" mode the only flash functions available are Auto or Flash Off - in order to get the option of "Flash On" for all pictures you have to put the camera in "Manual" mode - to do this:

-Set the mode switch to the camera icon
-Press the "Func./Set" button
-Use the left or right arrow keys to set it to Manual mode (its icon looks like half a camera with the letter M beside it)
-Press the "Func./Set" button again to save your mode change.

Now when you press the flash button and cycle through the choices there will also be a "Flash On" option.

My sb 600 fires with the camera but it seems not illuminate

Definately a settings problem. The camera will only syncronize on one specific speed. Youe best bet is to use auto. For manual, you'll have to set the shutter speed at the sync speed.

Flash Sync Speed
  • up to 1/250 X-Sync Speed
  • up to 1/8000 FP High Speed Sync
  • Red-eye reduction
    Red-eye reduction with slow sync
    Rear-curtain sync
    Slow sync
Front-curtain sync (normal) Flash Sync Modes
  • 1) i-TTL: TTL flash control by 1,005-pixel RGB sensor, built-in flash, SB-800, SB-600, SB-400: i-TTL balanced fill-flash and standard i-TTL flash
    2) AA (Auto Aperture-type) flash: Available with SB-800 used with CPU lens
    3) Non-TTL Auto: Available with Speedlights such as SB-800, 28, 27, and 22S
    4) Range-priority manual flash; available with SB-800 Flash Control
