Can't scan using MS document scanning. This problem just started happening and I get the error message: ''The scan failed because of a scanner hardware error. Feeder may be jammed. Please correct the error and scan again.'' I am using an HP Scanjet 5550c. Anybody know the fix?

  • Vandtekor May 07, 2009

Yes, I'm getting the same problem. Running Vista 32, using an old Lexmark 5500 with MS Office 2003 Document Scanning. Worked a treat for a period of time, then without warning nor reason, I get:

"The scan failed because of a scanner hardward error. Feeder may be jammed. Please correct the error and scan again"

Strange thing is, it'll scan the preview and then just as the scanning light is about to return to it's original position as the preview scan is complete, this error will flag up and the scan is aborted.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver(s), but to no avail. All very frustrating...

Any help anybody has, or hints in the right direction would be much appreciated. Thanks

I had the same problem on Vista Home x64 with a Lexmark 5150. I solved it by scanning from Windows Photo Gallery.

Yep. I also can't scan using the Samsung SCX-4200, which results in that error

''The scan failed because of a scanner hardware error. Feeder may be jammed. Please correct the error and scan again.''

This is a step in the right direction, but by no means a solution. I tried scanning with VueScan, and it worked fine, which indicates that the problem lies with MS Document Scanning which I was using before.

I shall investigate further and post any useful info.

Btw, you can always use Ifranview to scan documents. I used this as a
replacement for MS Doc Img, as that failed. It's available at http://irfanview.com/. The only downside to it though, is that is scans
at lower quality than MS Doc Img, though there may (must) be away
    around this.

If you choose the twain driver under the scanner link it will work. According to MS's Office site, WIA may not work with their application.

Paper load error

Try this approach:
1. Remove all the paper from the scanner feeder.2. Re-brick the printer by by pulling out the power supply - the black box where the power cord is plugged into. Re-plug after 30 seconds.3. When the printer turns on, try to scan again to verify that the problem is fixed.
Should the error continue, please contact Lexmark Technical Support Center for additional assistance.

What does document in ADF mean

Hello, Thanks for using Fixya today.
ADF is auto document feeder, used to feed a document into a scanner or printer. The error is associated when there is a document or paper jam at the document feeder, or paper trail.
This would happen mostly on scanners and all in one printers after witch a document is left in the feeder or there was a paper jam occurrence. We hope this answers your questions today?
Please contact us again if you still have a issue, or need help with anything else.
Thanks for using Fixya.com

Details of each item are shown below.
[From 1st Page]: If a paper jam occurs in the feeder, scanning starts again from the first page of the document. [From Stopped Original]: If a paper jam occurs in the feeder, scanning starts again from the page of the document scanning was interrupted.

Cannot clear error message "Document

Hi nigel_lester,

This error message "Document in ADF" that you are getting means that you need to remove foreign object from the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF). Kindly follow the procedure below in clearing document jams:

Document jams in the ADF (Document Tray)

1. First, press Stop/Reset.
2. If a multi-page document is loaded, remove any documents other than the jammed page from the ADF. 3. Then, open the Feeder Cover.
4. From under the roller to the Feeder Cover side, remove the jammed page.
5. If a document is not jammed, check the document feed area if there's foreign material. If there's any, carefully remove it.
6. Close the Feeder Cover.

NOTE:
  • If documents remain in the ADF after pressing during scanning, [Document in ADF] will appear on the LCD. Press so that the remaining document is automatically fed out.
  • When rescanning the document after clearing the error, rescan it from the first page.

Document jams in the ADF (inner side)

1. Press Stop/Reset.
2. If a multi-page document is loaded, remove any documents other than the jammed page from the ADF, then open the Feeder Cover.
3. Raise the paper release lever (A) then remove the jammed page from under the roller to the Feeder Cover side.
4. Open the Document Cover and pull out the document from the inner side.
5. Close the Document Cover.
6. Close the Feeder Cover.

Note: When rescanning the document after clearing the error, rescan it from the first page.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using Fixya.

Brother MFC 9440CN - I am getting "Document Jam"

Take the cover off of the ADF, rub clean the rollers with a damp cloth. Make sure there is no paper stuck in the area Also, check that the sensor flags are activating. just move them back and they should bounce back to normal position. Cleaning should do the trick.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response. Thanks, Joe

THE UPPER UNIT FLASHES ON THE SCREEN WITH ERROR CODE 39,003,40;75554

On the Xerox 8560MFP multifunction, this error code 39,003 signifies a Scanner problem, specifically that the Optical Test has failed. the 75554 is your current page count on the printer.
The Scanner Assembly 062K22590 must be replaced. It is fairly expensive, but moderately easy to replace.
You should also order the Scanner Calibration Sheet 109K01910 to make sure that margins and contrast are correct.
The scan/ document section is broken into 2 main parts, the Scanner, and the Automatic Document feeder. The feeder section is probably working fine.
Good luck with that.
