My Panasonic dmr es15s dvd recorder which I purchased from Best Buy online 2 years ago is not formatting the Memorex dvd+r dl disks I bought for it. After reading the disk, It says on the screen that formatting was successful but the display on the machine flashes that the disk is still unformatted. I've recorded with Memorex dvd+r dl disks before and never had this problem. The only difference is that ones I used before were the discontinued red box type. I would like your response before I bring in the machine for service. I still have 2 years remaining on the Performance Service Plan. Thank you.

Re: dvd recorder formatting problem
#1 Insert your ( memory card , flash disk , cellphone , .... ) into your computer. #2 Open up 'My Computer'. You should see it under the list of available drives. #3 Check its contents first to make sure that you have the right drive. #4 In 'My Computer', right-click on the drive and choose 'Format'. #5 Leave all the options as they are and click on 'Start'. This is a non-reversible process so make sure this is what you truly wanted to do in the first place. #6 Once the process is completed, take the memory card out and insert it into your Digital Camera or any other device. Try to browse to it to make sure it works fine

I had a similar problem with my DMR-ES15 a little over 2 years ago, and, I too, could not find a solution. I resorted to sending it off to Panasonic for their 'out of warrantee' repair, for a hefty price. (I could have bought new, but really liked the features of the ES15.) Panasonic repaired it, and it worked well for another 2 years. Just recently, 3 weeks ago, it died it's second death, with the same issue. I wish I had a solution for both of us, but it seems it is a failure which cannot be repaired by the consumer. I had seen a previous post, which has a suggestion of looking for '2 failed capacitors', but no other information, not even where these capacitors are located in the machine. I enterd a post myself, but have received so solutions/suggestions, and I don't even see my post on this site anymore. I'm a little disappointed with 'Fixya'...
If I find any new information, I'll be sure to post it.
U88 means the unit has detected an error while recording or playing and has entered its recovery process to restore the unit to normal operation. You could try using a DVD-RAM disk or a different make of DVD-R but, as you say the unit is new, you should probably return it to the retailer for exchamge, repair or refund according to unit age and retailer's return policy.
The DMR-ES15 is a later model (around 2006/07) than the DMR-E50 (2003/04), but essentially both should do the same job so technically - a good equivalent in terms of recording and same brand so yes. The connections on the rear (of the replacement recorder) should suit and work with your other devices just as the old one did.
According to some other online reviews, the DMR-E50 has had a few issues with recording, and finalizing certain discs.
I'd say go for it - accept the replacement - as long as it comes with some kind of guarantee, works fully and has all the accessories (including remote, instructions etc.) you should be good. Contact the store and seal the deal.
For the unit to be confirmed if its o.k or not You have to take disc which is not very knew and slight scratches ,offcourse which is playing in your other dvd player.Play it on dmr-es 10 see if it plays normally,if it does than its lens is o.k.Other thing you can try is insert blanck disc and try formatting it,if it does than it s o.k.Try R+,R- AND RW+,RW-.iF This disc can be formatted on dmr es10 than the unit you can decide to purchase
