Question about Samsung HCN436W 43" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Yet another convergence issue - but need your help!

Hello,

My TV seems to have gotten the apparently common convergence issue. I will replace the two STK modules, but what is this about resistors? Where are they located and how can I tell if they're bad? Should I be looking at replacing other things then the STK ICs or is that usually sufficient?

Thanks for the help!

    Thanks, will look into it!

  • Mike G May 20, 2008

Does anybody have the instructions on how to remove and reinstall the two ICs on this system? Should I try removing the main board? Is there solder on the reverse side of the board where the pins go through? There are two screws in each IC and the back of the ICs are glued to the metal heat sink. How does one cut that glue away? Thanks for the info.

I'm a little thrown off by the mention of Sanyo.

  • Mike G May 22, 2008

Also, Electronix Online has them for 7.99. Should I be wary?

  • Mike G May 22, 2008

Sorry for all the questions. I've just read that the STK392-040 would be a better substitution. Slinteriors (or someone else)... would you be able to comment?

  • Mike G Jun 15, 2008

Well, I finally got the new ICs installed... opted for the 040s instead. However, now the tv powers on but the bulbs don't seem to be firing, so nothing on the screen. I'm guessing this could be a number of things...but any idea where to check?

  • Mike G Jun 20, 2008

    ANybody?

  • Mike G Jun 20, 2008

yeah, the new solder connections are perfect. can you give me more info on the deflection board? what/where is it?

  • Mike G Jul 09, 2008

Sorry for the delay in responding...I've been away on business for a while and hadn't had a chance to try anything out.

Well, we had the system working for a few minutes (the problem was a pin on the underside of the board that was knocked loose - and requiring a little bit of solder to close it up). Unfortunately, my friend who was helping me bridged two heat sinks up while the tv was on (he was putting in the remaining screws in the board). This was one of the convergence IC heatsinks and another one to it's immediate right. Now NOTHING turns on, we still here something firing up, but no picture or sound - even the front button won't work. Is there a sort of master fuse on the board? If not, what could we look for as the new culprit? (nothing seems to have burned out)

  • Mike G Jul 10, 2008

Any way to tell if they are blown? I will take a picture of the board tonight ...

  • Mike G Jul 10, 2008

Here are a few pictures. In the first one, #1 shows the two heatsinks at the front that touched and seemed to set things off. Also, would you be able to identify what item is in #2?

    Image 1

In the second picture, I have highlighted some (I haven't done the whole board yet) of the resistors (or pico fuses) that aren't showing any continuity. Seems like a big hassle to go through all these. Do you know where a new board (BP41-00137A) can be sourced out?

Most times the ICs will be sufficient, but on certain models one or two of the convergence resistors will be burned and often dont show any outward appearance. They are located right next to the ICs about 10 of them all identical and you need to unsolder one side of the resistor and lift the one side out of circuit then check it for resisitance with an ohms meter if it doesnt register it will need to be replaced.

yes the sub board has to be removed allthough that model will be able to be rotated and flipped while leaving the HV lead attached the IC pins are solderd to the underside of the circuit. just remove the screws and take a thin screwdriver or something simmallar to pry the ICs away from the heatsink, as the heat sink compoubd tends to dry and causes them to appear glued buy pry carefully and they will come off.

Be wary of where you buy the ICs . often you get cheap chineese knock offs that dont last. If you want good ones go to this link and they will provide free instalation instructions with your order, and yes STK3920040 runs cooler , but a little more exspensive but will work better. Heres a link to get quality ICs.

have you checked the solder connections on the Ics for being bridged? You may need a deflection board. If you need further assistance let me know.

Its the PCB with the Flyback on it. If you can post a picture of the chassis from the back of your set I can circle the board for you.

There are some little pico fuses they look like resistors but they are solid color no bands they are usually green or yellow on samsungs.

The pico fuses can be checked in circuit witha ohms meter just check them for continuity.

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony,Samsung, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit wiith instructions from the links below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms
  • Screen Looks 3-D
  • Colors wont align
  • Screen may look distorted or warped
  • No Audio/Video - makes a chirping sound.
Problem #2

Another common problem is dull or washed out video.
Your TV may have one or more of the following symptoms....
  • Dull looking picture
  • White looking picture
  • Halos around objects
  • Red/Orange looking picture

If you have background in electronics, you can do it. The difficult part here is on how to access those convergence amp(convergence circuit output IC). By replacing those 2 IC and some resistors sometimes, adjust the convergence and your done. Good Luck

Tv keeps turning its self off

Many issues can cause this, there is no simple answer, but one common issue is the convergence circuit failing. The set will need repaired.

If you are handy with electronics you see if the convergence ic's are failing, usaly on these there is a short jumper connector from the right board to the middle board closest to you from the back, if you disconnect this connector from the back and the tv comes on it is a convergence ic problem. In this case you need to replace the ic's on the convergence board the two stk392 ic's plus check the resistor.

Both convergence amplifiers should have been replaced at the same time. If you can get your hands on a service maual, replace both of them, and go through the convergence alignment in the manual.

Dull picture after even after i replaced the lamp

Sorry to say it but your so called Technicians don't seem to have a clue.

One person talks about adjusting the convergence which you can't on this set, besides the TV shutting off on its own have NOTHING to do with convergence.

All the answers given are the same...replace the lamp, replacing a good lamp will NOT fix the problem with this TV. I have the same set and it has the same issue.

None of your "Technicians" seem to know, they just pretend or come up with standard answers.

The screen is just blue... apparently, the red ad green lights are blown. How do I rectify this situation? Sony rear video tv kp51ws500

Problem : Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Solution :

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com.They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kitfor your set send them a quick note and they will put one together foryou. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

I hope this will solve your issue.

Good Luck.

If my solution proves useful please accept it.

Arjun

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.
