Why doesn't the dryer stay running when I let go of the start switch?

Hi, There is only one reason I can see the dryer stops after you let off on the start switch is the motor because GE motors has start switches either built inside the motor which is non removable or built outside the motor which can be replaced .
Its called a motor start switch and the way to locate it is to remove the front panel on the dryer and remove the drum and belt and then write down the motor model number and look at all the wires that go into the motor which is your motor start switch that is held in by two screws but before you remove it don't forget to copy the wire down on piece of paper of how you remove them .
If you don't see a black switch to the motor then its built in and the motor needs to be replaced.

DHDSr46ee1ww has new heating element and switch but will not start.

Have you checked the motor kill switch? Its located by the motor.When the belt comes off the idler pulley actuates this killing power to the machine. Sometimes the switch goes bad over time and needs to be changed. The part number is wd21x10261 and runs around $12

Problem with my GE dryer mod: DBSR453EB1CC. Tried turning it on, and would stay on. As soon as you let the switch go. It shuts off. While its on the tumbler doesn't move. I would appreciate any advice....

Hello,

That sounds very typical of a broken belt. GE dryers use a belt switch that will cause exactly as your describing...the motor will run as long as holding the start switch and as soon as you release it the motor will stop if the belt switch is not satisfied that the belt is in place...so it again sound very much like the belt is broken.

The part number for the belt is WE12M29 it could be purchased at your local appliance parts store or online at;

apdepot.com

Hello,

I have seen that in those dryers before and it has always been the motor that is causing it to start without engaging the start switch.

My ge electric dryer model number fse747ges1 wont start. i replaced the start switch. still wont start.

Check the door switch. If it is bad, loose, or faulty, the machine won't start. You can test the switch with an ohmmeter. They are a common problem causer, especially in a no-start senario

Dryer will start but won't stay on - only works if you hold switch on

HI. The start switch is the culprit in this situation. you must replace the switch asap. The replacement of the switch will correct this issue. The switch circuit is weak, and not able to maintain a closed circuit.
