Question about PC Desktops

When opening a program adobe reader opens with a blank sceen and tells me that it could not open (the program) because it is not a supported file or it has been damaged

    I did not explain the problem properly It open with all sorts of programs for example Corel Draw, spider solitaire, internet explorer, Itunes, utility programs ...

    I have discovered that I had to go to my computer, folder option, file types and repair the extension. I have no Ideal how this changed but it repaired my problem "BUT THANKS FOR THE HELP"

What file are you trying to open? adobe reader only opens documents in pdf and adobe format. when opening a program, right click then choose "open with" option, and select the appropriate program to open the file with. most of them open with internet explorer or ms word.

    the problem is with adobe reader then. it must be damaged, or corupted. you need to uninstall it and instal a fresh copy copy of adobe reader. i had a similar problem once, so a did the same thing

may help to indicate what happens when you try to open pdf files however, try to clear browsing history and cookies and make sure you have the latest acrobat reader installed and check that your PDF files are associated and set to be opened by default using acrobat reader

Cant open pdf


Make sure only adobe 9 is the only version of adobe reader you have installed on that computer. Then go to where your PDF file is and right click on it with the mouse and go into properties.

In the general tab where it says type of file it will show you what program is opening up the PDF file. Click on the change button and where it says recommended programs see if Adobe reader is there, if its not then down below where it says other programs click on the down arrow and see if adobe reader shows up there. If it shows up in either section then choose it, then click on apply, and then click on okay.

Now if for some reason adobe reader doesn't show up in either section, then you'll need to browse for it. It normally installs itself in the program files folder, then double-click on it and go into the adobe folder, Adobe 9.0 and then the reader folder. The name of the reader program looks something like acrord32 and it will say application to the right of it. At that point choose it and apply the changes so it opens up with Adobe reader.

Hi Kate1958. I found this for you. Do one or more of the following solutions:
Solution 1: Remove all versions of Acrobat or Reader, and then reinstall one version.
If multiple versions of Acrobat or Reader are installed on the system, remove all versions and then install only one version. See the documentation included with Windows for information about removing programs.
Note: If you need to have multiple versions of an Acrobat product installed, remove all versions and then reinstall them starting with the earliest, installing the latest version last.
Solution 2: Start Acrobat or Reader, and then open the PDF file in the web browser.
If an error occurs when you try to start Acrobat or Reader, refer to Related Documents below, or search the Adobe Support Knowledgebase:
-- If you use Acrobat, go to www.adobe.com/support/products/acrobat.html .
-- If you use Reader, go to www.adobe.com/support/products/acrreader.html .
Solution 3: Make sure that the External Window Handler file (ewh32.api) is in the Plug-ins folder.
If this file is missing, reinstall Acrobat or Adobe Reader.
The default location of the Plug-ins folder is:
-- For Acrobat: Program FilesAdobeAcrobat [version]Acrobat
-- For Reader: Program FilesAdobeAcrobat [version]Reader
Solution 4: Disable Web Browser Integration.
Disable Web Browser Integration so that PDF files open directly in Acrobat or Reader instead of in the web browser.
To disable Web Browser Integration in Acrobat 6.0.x -7.0.x or Reader 6.0.x -7.0.x:
1. Open Acrobat or Reader.
2. Choose Edit > Preferences > Internet.
3. Deselect Display PDF in Browser.
4. Click OK.
To disable Web Browser Integration in Acrobat 5.x or Acrobat Reader 5.x:
1. Open Acrobat or Acrobat Reader.
2. Choose Edit > Preferences > General.
3. Click Options in the list in the Preferences dialog box.
4. Deselect Display PDF in Browser.
5. Click OK.
To disable Web Browser Integration in Acrobat 4.x or Acrobat Reader 4.x:
1. Open Acrobat or Acrobat Reader.
2. Choose File > Preferences > General.
3. Deselect Web Browser Integration in the General Preferences dialog box.
4. Click OK.

When I open an attachment-pdf for instance. or any attachment for that matter. The windows media player opens, with an error message saying it cannot open this type file. is this an adobe reader problem


Sounds like your files are not assigned to the correct program.

Open Windows Explorer and find a pdf file.

Right click on it and choose Open With...

Select Adobe Reader and check the box at the bottom that says:

Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.

Click OK.

All pdf files should then open in Adobe.

You can do the same with any other type of file by choosing the program you want to open it with.

Cannot use reader 8.0,cannot remove it or install 9.0


oddly enough, you may find that updating the version 8.0 you have to 8.x will then allow you to remove it (or it will work correctly) can you open the reader manually in the programs list? if so open it, then go to help and check for updates. apply the updates. If they work you should be in good shape.

You need to update your reader. Go to the www.adobe.com/acrobat site and locate the dowlnload file for the latest version

Uninstall your current reader.

Turn off all running programs including your virus control while you download and install the new software.

Restart your computer.

In some instances, updating existing software or installing new programs onto your computer can cause issues such as what you have encountered. Fortunately, re-associating .PDF files with Adobe Acrobat Reader instead of MS Word 2007 may be all that you need to do. Most versions of Windows allow users to select the program they want to use to open any given file type, and can usually be done by following the steps I’ve provided below.

1) Right-click on the .PDF file icon.

2) Choose "Open With" from the menu that appears.

3) When you highlight the “Open With” option a submenu should appear. Click on the link in this menu that says “Choose Program.”

4) Another window should then open, providing a list of the available programs on your computer. Choose Adobe Acrobat Reader from the menu and check the box next to it.

5) At the bottom of the page there should also be an option that says something similar to "Always use this program to open this file type." Make sure that this option is enabled.

6) Click "OK."

Adobe reader could not open 'template.02{1}.zip' because it is either not a supported file or because the file has been damaged


that is zip file. You need to open it with winrar or winzip program. Zip is compresion format, after you open that file with winrar you will probably see your pdf file that you cann open with adoble reader.

When I download and install adobe, I get adobe reader icons on all my desktop programs, and nothing will open. ALso I can't open PDF files.


Had a problem with Adobe. Not sure what I did, but most of the icons on my desktop looked like an adobe icon. If I clicked on any of the icons like this, including a pdf file, it wouldn't open the file or program. Instead I'd get a warning box that said something like there is no file to support my request. So I removed adobe from my computer using the control panel, and everything worked ok except that I couldn't open a PDF file. I reloaded Adobe reader 9.0, and had the same problem again, so I again removed Adobe from my computer, and did a restore and now everything seems to work fine. Oh, by the way, I have Vista Home Basic as my operating system.

I have windows Vista and loaded the newest Adobe Reader, but my computer will not open .pdf files that are sent attached to an email. I have uninstalled Reader and reinstalled it twice, to no avail. Any...


Do you get a dialog box saying that the file can't be opened? and down the bottom is a button with which you can select a program to open the file with?

If yes, click on this - Acrobat may not be listed (hence the problem). There should be a Browse button, click on this an work youur way to C:\Programs\Adobe\Acrobat (or some such naming) enter the Acrobat folder and find the Acrobat EXE file - click on this and say yes to all the prompts on your way out. This will now associate Acrobat with PDF files.

Hope this works.
