Question about Sony KDS-R50XBR1 50" HDTV

3 Answers

Need suggestions!!! I own a Sony KDS-R50XBR1 television and it will blink green about 10 times and the picture will boot up for a split second and then the green light turns red and blinks 4 times. No picture. Anything I can do before a repair man comes out? I do have an extended warranty and it will cover the repairs but I know it will take 3 weeks on average to get them out to the house.

This is a fan issue, most likely the large fan in the rear, lower left (from the back)...

    Here's the fix, I promise, it's EASY........

Ok, I think I have the answer for the BIG FAN failure. I recently did a
similar fix on the spindle of an xbox 360 and it is identical. Ok, this
    is an EXTREMELY EASY FIX...

Open the back of the tv, locate the large fan (on the lower left on the back of the set.) unscrew the screen and remove the fan.

Once the fan is removed, you will see the side with the model number and the other side is totally open.

    On the open side, pull...

The fan will come off, into your hand, it is only held by magnets...

You will notice a spindle on the fan and the other side has the magnets
and the hole where the spindle came from (this is the fan motor).

Clean both the spindle and the hole (motor) with a q-tip. The hole is
smaller than the q-tip, but do the best you can to remove the old
    lubricant.

Get a bit of WD40 and lubricate the spindle and spray a touch in the hole.

Put them together, reconnect your fan, test it on startup and thank me...lol...

HOPE THIS HELPS!!!! IT WORKS, TRUST ME...

Wow, that actually worked. Thanks Cliffmail. I did exactly what you suggested and now both fans are running and my TV is working again. I know it might not be a long term solutions, but it is really dusty back there so maybe that is my only issue. Thanks....

Hi
I have the same problem and this is caused by one of the fans not coming on when the TV boots up. If you look behind the TV you can see two of the fans without even removing the cover. The one on the left is a large fan that cools the bulb. This is the one that has died on mine. If I CAREFULLY stick a small screwdriver through the fan grate on the back I can give the fan a nudge and it will start up. Then the TV comes on OK. If you have extended coverage then you should be fine - but if they tell you the part is not covered - it should be easy to replace the fan. The problem is finding one. I found one place that sells it for about $25 but they have no pictures - so I am not sure which is the right fan. Let me know how you made out with the repair guy.

I have a Sony KDS-R50XBR1. it worked fine last night, this morning however, it did not come on at all. it blinks green for awhile, then blinks red continuesly. what is wrong? please help.

The red blinks are a diagnostic tool. If you search this site for KDS-R50XBR1 you will see several problems and the area to look in to. the red blinks should be followed by a three second pause and then repeat. Just count the blinks after the pause and you should have a better idea of what is wrong. The service manual goes all the way up to ten blinks.

I have a Sony KDS-R50XBR1 that has no picture. When I turn on the TV, the green Power/Standby LED light blinks for about 30 seconds, then turns red and blinks five times. The Power/Standby LED repeats...

  • Five blinks - AKB circuit (automatic kine bias), the timer/standby indicator blinks for about 30 seconds then goes to the self-diagnosis function. Something is wrong with the video. Check video out, Q705, 732, 761 and other components on the C board, also check Q218, 219, 220 on the A board. In addition, unit could be in IK blanking, try turning up screen A2 slightly.

My KDS-R50XBR1 will power on with picture for approx 1 second with the power light in green, then shut down automatically and the lamp light blinks 4 times. Is this a bad lamp only? Thanks! Mike A.

Hi,
If Lamp light blinks then it is lamp that is near to end of its working life.
If standby light is blinking then it is some thing else, when did you replaced lamp in tv last time?
Thanks.

Sony kds-r50xbr1 turns itself off and then green light blinks 52

I too have a Sony KDS-R60XBR1 tv and the issue that you are experiencing is due to one of your fans in the rear of the tv is not working.  The tv automatically shuts off in protective mode.  Make sure the POWER/STANDBY light is blinking and not the lamp light below it.  Is the power/standby blinking 4 times in red? If, yes then its a fan that needs to be replaced.  If its the lamp light blinking then you need to replace the lamp.  The lamp is easy to replace by ordering the lamp either from Sony for $250 or find it cheaper for approx. $150 from other DLP sources and replace youself by following your manual.  I hope this helps you.

If you are positive that the fan is still running and that it isn't an over heating issue, I would venture to say you need a new dlp lamp. Your model uses a Sony XL 5100 dlp lamp. You can grab one over at DLPLamps.com.

Power indicator only blinks green for several minutes, then...

I had identical problem which continued for months before the screen started to get dim then went completely black with only the audio remaining. This will happen when the lamp and or balast board starts to fail. You can buy replacement lamp off the internet and install it using only a screw driver. Your Sony manual provides instructions. Don't buy any of those cheap off brand lamps; light output might be low.
