Question about Toshiba e740 Pocket PC

5 Answers

Not powering on

Hi! I had e740 for at about 5 years. Until I used it myself it was working ok. I then gave it to a friend of mine. The only problem I had at that point (about a year ago) was that the battery was discharging really fast however it was still working OK and was recharging. Then the recharging problem increased so my friend purchased a brand new battery however the scene didn't change much. Now the PDA won't turn on at all. I have already checked that the battery lock is in the correct position and the battery switch is on the left but still no go. Any idea?

I forgot to mention that the PDA doesn't turn on even when is connected to the AC, i.e. right now doesn't turn even with the recharger plugged in.

  • bobo2005 May 21, 2008

No, I tried that. For a while actually, before going dead completely, was working only if charged to the cradle directly but now it doesn't, this means whether it is connected directly to the recharger or to the cradle.

  • bobo2005 May 21, 2008

Yes I did, it is 82016924L, so I guess it is within range right?

  • bobo2005 May 21, 2008

I opened it but I didn't see any loose connection in the area surrounding the recharger socket. There were two very loose pieces that look like two very small plugs on either side of the mid section of the PDA which as soon as I lifted the cover they came undone. I didn't take this further to avoid create any damage. I plugged in again and now I get a green light instead of orange which is strange but it doesn't turn on still.
I called also the number that you suggested but it is not Toshiba, it is another company. Are you sure about this phone #?

  • bobo2005 May 21, 2008

I called 800 949-7993 but I get a text message on my phone saying "Reply Y now to get info on the # you are trying to reach. Locator Svc $9.99/month+std fees for 20 lookups/month. Support terms? www.sms181.com. I'm not sure what this is. Any clue?

  • bobo2005 May 21, 2008

I have been given the runaround. Each single number that they gave me was wrong. I eventually talked to a customer service rep in Arizona who said Toshiba no longer supports PDA's but she was not able to tell me who can handle this. Do you have a number for their HQ? Do you know when the the recall was issued? It seems to me that if they sell a product that is faulty they should be taking responsibility for it even if they are not producing them anymore.

  • bobo2005 May 24, 2008

No, I have not been able to. I have sent a message on the Toshiba web site but I didn't get any answer. It is hard to find anyone that can take this on. The closest I got was someone at the corporate office who gave me the number of the closest repair facility associated with Toshiba but they are not Toshiba so I don't think this is going to help. I didn't have time to take it further, will try again this coming week.

  • bobo2005 Jun 04, 2008

Thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunately I didn't have much time to make calls but so far I think I have tried at least 7 times the various "customer service", "support" etc. numbers and everyone pleads ignorance about this the main answer being that they are not selling PDA's anymore. At this point what do you guys suggest? All I am interested in is if there is anyway to recover some money or be able to still use the PDA in anyway, assuming that I will not get anywhere with Toshiba. Basically the deal is that my friend paid me for this PDA and since has not really worked I have to give her money back.

  • bobo2005 Jun 04, 2008

Unfortunately it didn't work but I think that what you guys have provided has been helpful. I would like to close this if you can also answer my previous comment. Thanks.

Yes, the discharging issue is well known with this model.

Download and install all updates from the Toshiba website, especially update to ROM version 1.0623.xxxx.

Hopefully that should work.

You can download the ROM update HERE

  • Swilin Sampson
    Swilin Sampson May 21, 2008

Try connecting to an AC source to get it ON, to install the update.
Also you can try cleaning the battery terminals and contact on both the e740 and the battery. Dont leave the battery out too long however, as this can cause a hard reset..If possible, try to use a different battery and see if this works. Could be that the new battery was defective.

If all else fails, you may have to contact Toshiba support.

Well, looks like you will have to get it serviced or replaced..Like bestdarngood posted, you can try to get Toshiba to replace the piece if it falls within the serial numbers mentioned. But I think this offer is not valid anymore...
Anyways, no harm in trying to call them and see if they can replace it for you.

    Try (800) 631-3811 or (800) 457-7777

  • Swilin Sampson
    Swilin Sampson May 21, 2008

Like I said, I think the offer ran out in September of last year.

Try calling their Tech Support at (800) 631-3811 or (800) 457-7777

Hope that helps! Should you have any further questions, please post them here.

To be brutally honest, any further attempts to repair this PDA will only result in you having to spend more money and is not really worth it (since Toshiba claim to have no idea about this, or the recall dates have expired, as I mentioned earlier). I feel it is best to cut your losses while you can and try to offload it on eBay or a similar site. Probably someone would buy it for spare parts...
In any case, most of the data would be lost anyway, and trying a repair with a similar occurence in future will only result in more losses - both financial and data..

There was a firmware and battery problem with some of these models and also a recall which stated

Toshiba has issued a voluntary recall of their Toshibe e740 Pocket PCs with serial numbers 72014641L through 92041620L. The recall is due to problems with the battery which could potentially result in a loss of data.

Toshiba has issued statements saying that e740 Pocket PCs in the affected range may experience a loss of data if the battery is allowed to fully discharge. Data may also be lost if the battery is disconnected from the device for any reason.

If your device is in the affected range you are asked to please contact Toshiba at 800-788-1653. A customer care representative will make the proper arrangements for the exchange.

Please let me know if you have any further questions, but if your toshiba falls into the number range, then you're in luck and can get a new one or have yours fixed for free. Please update me on the situation and whether it falls in this range

Did you have a look at the serial number? Please let me know what you find.

If you open it up you may find a loose connection right where it plugs in. Most likely a thin piece of metal that snapped which is part of the charging unit.

yes it is, so try calling that number, I'm not sure about the hours of service but it looks like you may be able to get it replaced for free. Please let me know what they say when you call.

Since the unit and the recall are so old, the number originally used may not be good anymore, try calling the basic Toshiba support number at 800-457-7777

  • Benjamin Patri
    Benjamin Patri May 21, 2008

that number should have worked according to the website, let me know if you experience any other problems

    Benjamin Patri May 21, 2008

the recall was issued about 5 years ago right after the time that the device came out and the numbers I gave you were from the recall notice. The manufacturer would be the only one that would be able to handle this issue for free.

  • Benjamin Patri
    Benjamin Patri Jun 04, 2008

If anything, you could try selling it on ebay or craigslist and someone may be interested in buying it, other than that, since it is so old, the value has dropped quite a bit and it would be time for a new one anyway.

good luck with whatever you do and if you ever need any more help just ask

I hope this was the question you were referring to, to end this, just rate my solution for feedback purposes.

Hi I have a brand new 320 GB PS3, barely a month old. Worked up until today when all I'm getting is "no signal". I've tried using other HDMI leads (component also) and TV's (mine is a Samsung...

Try these steps first -

Turn the PS3 off into standby (red light on)

Press and hold the power button. It will beep when you first press it, then beep again 5 seconds later. Release the power button when you hear this second beep

Wait for the PS3 to reset its display.

This will now choose the best setting for your TV and everything should be ok.

If you still get problems, go back to where you purchased it from or contact Sony, as it is under a year old it is still within warranty laws etc

Hope this helps

No need to asking that password to your friend of your friends. you can unlock blackberry curve password even you don't know your previous password, but you will lose all your previous data in that phone. If you ready just type any password until your reach 10 failure of password, that will make your blackberry unlocked from old password so you can setup new password again for your phone.

Hi danny

There not that much to take apart on the sm58. On page 2 of the user manual there is a wiring diagram to reconnect wires. the grill wind filter part screws on. The socket on the bottom is secured with a screw.

Power on password for toshiba satellite m30-107

You can by shorting the CMOS/BIOS battery connector for 30 sec's with a resister pack (2.4 KOhms), but if you don't have any PC repair experience, don't try it!

"You can blow the motherboard if you get it wrong.."

I suggest you take it to a Toshiba repair shop, it will cost about $100 to have them do it for you.
