Wavey picture my set takes some time to "warm up". when I turn it on you cannot make out the picture at all but after a few minutes it clears up. The whole picture seems to have little wavey lines or twitching of the picture. what can I do? I was an AT in the Navy so I can fix it myself if I know what to fix or replace. thank you for your help

Zebra19. This problem is a common occurance in these sets. So common that there is a service bulliteen to service centers on it. Fixing it is not easy though. It ivolves 11 very very small micro capacitors. on what is known as the hypermodule. In an ideal world replacing the hypermodule is the best course of action. but.. these are almost impossible to find. if you are very good at soldering and have a lighted magnifer and very small twezzers it can be fixed. but if you damage the board....... i have done this repair about 6 times.. replacing them is what need to happen. 11 10 microfard surface capswavey picture - caae315.jpg this is the hypermodule ... it is a board in a sheilded can that plugs in behind the input termals in the back. kind hard to get too. the caps are the small circular components that you see with the red and black marks on it.

I have a older rear projection tv when I turn it on the picture is fine at first about 20 minutes later it gets wavey and has lines in it.model #d52w135d

When a problem takes a while to show up, it's usually a thermal issue with some component or solder connections. (The same thing can also happen in reverse; something doesn't work right when you turn the set on but clears up with time.)

Unfortunately, there are several areas where problems can cause the symptoms you describe, so I can't suggest a specific part. But the most likely areas would be the tuner (if you're connected to an antenna or other signal source using the antenna connector), or video processing IC and surrounding components. The tuners in many RCA sets were well known for developing cracks in the soldering from the circuit board to the shield can, and this would cause lines or total signal loss as the set warmed up.

To help find what's causing this, you can use a non-metal item (I use a bamboo chopstick from my favorite restaurant) to tap around suspect areas to see if it's a connection problem. Spray cans of cooler are also available to chill down parts after the problem starts to see what might be at fault. When you get the right part or area with the spray you can see the effect on the screen.

You might want to see what a service technician would charge to check the set and give a repair estimate. If you're happy with the performance and the cost is reasonable, repairing this set might be economical. It usually isn't for small sets, but large screens are still a few hundred dollars.

Good luck, and thanks for using Fixya!

I have a toshiba big screen with three bulbs and the picture has wavey lines on the screen. Does this mean tubes are going out?

Most of these Toshiba sets have a "hyper board" that processes all the signal and a lot of them are going bad---lots of surface mounted filter caps on the board dry out and usually it begins that lines in the picture and after several minutes the problem slowly clears up and or goes away---as time goes on it takes longer and longer for it to go away----For most of these sets the only way to repair is remove the board and send it out for rebuild--rebuild of the board and labor may be more then the TV set is worth.

Wavey lines

Sounds like your set has dried caps in the Power Supply, take it to a decent tech, its not something you should try to do yourself as dangerous voltages can still be present evn if the set is unplugged.

Long warm up time

you have a bad capacitor in the deflection circuit. You will need some diagnosing and testing to find which one. An ESR meter will make short work of that but they are expensive meters.

Wavey Picture

The hyper or scan converter module is bad in this set. You can certainly have this set repaired and will run about 275 to 350 depending on where and who does the repair. Good Luck
