Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

Fluctuating volume Our old TV (10-15 years) still has a good picture but the volume will increase and/or decrease with no external prompting it seems. Even if we have the sound turned all the way down, it will at some point jump up to unbearable levels and we are not able to turn it back down. Turning it off and then back on makes no difference. Incidentally, we have not been able to control the volume for quite some time with a remote but have had to use the control on the TV itself to do this. Any idea if this is something that can be fixed, or should we just trash the TV? Actually, we have replaced it already with a bigger flat screen TV but would like to use it in a bedroom if we can get this problem fixed.

It is near impossible to assist without the make and model. Please update this with that info and we should be able to help.
Thanks,

We cannot increase or decrease the sound. There does not appear to be a volume control on the set and it does not respond to the remote. The remote is working in all other respects.

Make sure the speakers are turned on in the audio menu. Usually when the speakers are turned off the set goes into a fixed sound level at the audio output jacks. These jacks are used for external amplifiers, etc. Hope this helps. Thanks

Quasar- Model# SP3219U Television 32"

Dear Mr.Doscar,
One of the major problems with the electronic items is the aging of components. i think the components in your TV have aged quite a bit. you can of course repair your TV sir. But it will only be a stop gap arrangement. There is no guarantee that the problem won't reoccur. Also the amount you spend for repairing the TV can be spent for buying a new one. my recommendation is that Go for a new TV with latest features that will serve you in a longer run

Philips 27PS55S/121 sound level decreases

Yes, the dynamic range on DVD's is enough to cause the high and low passages to be somewhat annoying but, sounds more like a movie theater. This kind of dynamic range showed up first on Beta HiFi and VHS HiFi VCR's because of thier range as well. If there is a feature in your audio menus on your TV such as "audio expansion, SRS, Wide mode, etc." turn it off and let the audio be processed without expansion of any kind as that will amplify your dynamic range alot more. The lock up issue could be something Philips is aware about and if under warranty contact them. Otherwise not much you can do except manke sure the voltage going to the TV is failry stable between 110 volts and 120 volts. Sometimes dramatic drops and or increases can cause lock up or confusion to the microprocessor in the TV.

Tv has sound but no picture

Sounds like you have lost video somewhere in the video circuits. Possibly the picture tube could have gone bad or lost filiament voltage. You can check to see if you have high voltage by holding your bare arm close to the screen. The hairs will stand up if you have high voltage. Absence of high voltage will also cause a black screen, but the sound might not work either since on some sets the power for the sound is supplied from the same circuit as the high voltage. Stargazer
