Run a wash cycle with only some bleach in it. That works for us everytime ours gets a bit stinky... Good luck!

All washing machines have little nooks and crannies where the water doesn't really move very much. Wherever you get stagnant water you get biological build up (Mould) over time. When you compound that with recent trends for ever decreasing wash temperatures you are always going to end up with problems. Running washing machines at 30-40 C is just the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Couple that with the fact that most people use their washing machine every couple of days at least and you have a really nice environment for those bugs to grow. At least in the olden days Monday was wash day and Tuesday through Sunday the washing machine stood idle, so it got a chance to dry out. Bugs HATE drying out, even sewage works use drying as a means of pathogen kill.
There are a few ways you can kill off those nasty smelly bugs from your washing machine.
One - fill your washing machine with salt water. This will desiccate the bacteria on a cellular level and it's a pretty effective way of killing them. Unfortunately Salt water is corrosive and I have no idea what it would do to the insides of your washing machine, so you may end up with a nice smelling but completely broken washing machine.
Two - Boil wash cycle. Bugs love to be wet and warm, they don't like to be boiled. Anything above 60 C will start to kill off pretty much all bacteria. Unfortunately, that place where the smell is coming from, you know the stagnant water in your machine. It's stagnant because of the shape of your machine and the boiling water from your boil wash may not mix thoroughly in all the places you need it to. Boil wash will work, but there's no guarantees how well.
Three - Hot wash with a biocide. Sounds scary Biocide, but household bleach is a biocide - kills germs. Again the problem with household bleach is that it contains either peroxide or Chlorine. If it contains Chlorine it's going to attack all the shiny metal parts of your washing machine. So the best option really is to use a specially formulated washing machine sanitiser such as
Buy Washing Machine Sanitiser From Kleeneze Your online shop for Washing... This gives you the cleaning power that you need to get rid of that nasty smell but the peace of mind that it's not going to rot away all the hidden bits of your machine.

SMELLY WASHING MACHINE...IS IT DRIVING YOU CRAZY?

If your clothes smell after coming out of the washing machine there is a logical reason why and a Minnesota based company has an easy solution to your problem.Washing machine odor is a common problem that can be blamed on using too much detergent, only washing loads with cold water and even by using fabric softener.

It's a type of mold that does cause health problems."Paul Flynn took matters into his own hands and invented a solution called smelly washer cleaner. This citrus based powder claims to clean your washing machine of mildew and mold.Paul Flynn says, "We instruct just to let it sit there overnight.Pause the washer, let it soak overnight. It will take it away, guaranteed."If the smell doesn't go away, you can get your money back.

Getting a smell out of a kenmore front loading washing machine

If you have a smelly front loading clothes washing machine, toss in a Finish Geltabs (the ones that are all liquid) and run the machine on a hot wash cycle, medium to heavy load (to get more water in the tub) with no clothes in the machine. You don't need to use much of a spin cycle so set it on low. The washing machine will come clean and even the moldy spots on the rubber gaskets will disappear. A second treatment may be needed if the smell is not completely gone. We tried everything from vineger to bleach to baking soda to borax to commercially available odor removers from Whirlpool and Tide. Nothing worked until I hit on this idea. It's cheap, easy and can be done anytime your machine needs a refreshing. I used the orange Geltabs but any fragrance would be fine. Keep the door on your washer open a bit when possible to air out to help preclude thiose nasty smells.

I have a foul smell coming from my washer everytime I use it...It almost smells like sewer gas...HELP!!!

you probably just need to clean the bellow. Thats the rubber that goes around the tub and door. f not cleaned, it will get moldy and smelly. Theres a tablet that you can buy called affresh. just put the machine on a regular cycle if it doesn't have a clean or sanitize cycle, and put the tablet in. Let the machine complete the cycle. (without clothes). You can even try wiping the bellow out with vinegar. after each wash i suggest you wipe the machine out, drying the bellow and glass. Leave it open for about half an hour, to let it air out.

Bad smell inside drum and when draining also makes laundry smell

Recommend running it through empty (and without soap) on a long, hot wash cycle a couple of times.

Modern cool cycles don't always wash away all the detergent, and the machine fills up with smelly grey sludge after a while.

IMPORTANT: Read thoroughly. DO NOT add detergent or other laundry products to this cycle.
1. Remove all items from the washer.
2. Open the dispenser drawer and 2/3 cup (160 mL) of liquid chlorine bleach to the bleach compartment. DO NOT use more than 2/3 cup (160mL) of bleach per cycle as this will lead to product damage.
3. Close the washer door and dispenser drawer.
4. Select the Clean Washer cycle or a full wash cotton 104 F wash (40 C). DO NOT use any higher temperature as this will cause unnecessary fumes
5. Press Start and allow cycle to complete.
6. If the bad odour persists, repeat the procedure 1 or 2 more times. This may be necessary if this is the first time you have run this cycle.
7. After the cycle is complete, leave the door open slightly to allow ventilation and drying of the washer interior.
8. Repeat the cleaning procedure monthly.

Smelly drain water

I had the exact same problem and all of my clothes smelled like mildew. I switched to laundry detergent for front loaders ONLY and have eliminated this all together.
Run an empty cycle one time with 1cup of white vinegar.
Then start washing with the new detergent.
