Question about Mitsubishi VS-50705 50" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Mitsubishi VS-50705 50 in apparent convergence problem.

Some times my picture will look fine. Then, now more often, it appears the red, green and blue convergence split. It seems to go in and out. Around peoples heads you can see the red, green, blue ghost effect. Now if you use the display button the words for input and time appear to only see red and green split not blue. When it is out I attempt to go into the convergence with the + sign and even in advanced where you can do sections of the screen. But it doesn't appear to have any adjustment capabilities at all. In this adustment I can see all three color cross hatch patterns. Any ideas on something easy like capacitors, etc? I have a service manual and have been looking at the convergence section but nothing jumps out just yet. I'm looking around IC801,802,803 and the amp chips etc. All suggestions welcomed.

First thing a tech would do is solder around Convergence amps then check to see if you can align by menu then if can not. Change amps and maybe resistors.

I thought i might need a lamp for my mitsubishi tv--model VS 60607 when my tv is fuzzy when turned on.should i simply replace the lamp or is there something else i should try? thank you!

This TV is a rear projection television and does not have a lamp. It has three CRT color guns (Red, Blue, and Green). You have a convergence issue (the red, blue and green color guns aren't aligned properly) and it doesn't sound like a very big one. You should be able to adjust this through the CONVERGENCE Menu in ADVANCED SETTINGS.
More details can be found in your manual, here. The model number isn't exactly the same but I'm sure the process is identical or really close. The other option would be a bad IC (integrated circuit) for the convergence control. This is unlikely unless your picture looks something like this: captainhawk1_15.jpg

Since the problem corrected itself initially, it may just be poor solder connections. Try resoldering the pins on the convergence ICs. These are large black ICs attached to a heatsink and should be marked STKxxx. If resoldering does not resolve the problem, replace the ICs.

One of your convergence IC's has either cracked loose or burned out. The IC will have to be resoldered or replaced and then the convergence circuits realigned. If you do not have experience in repairing convergence circuits then have a qualified tech handle it for you. This is by far the most common failure in the projection sets and a good tech can have it fixed in about an hour and a half. I charge $150 for that but shops in your area will vary, so call around.
