Question about GoVideo VR3845 DVD Recorder/VCR

GoVideo VR3845 suddenly says "unknown disc"

All of a sudden, my otherwise reliable VR 3845 won't accept any kind of DVD, new, old, home-made, store-bought, etc. It spits them all out under the caption "unknown disc."
Can you help me with my problem?  Also, can you help me to navigate FixYa? (What a Great idea this is!)   This is my first time on FixYa, and I couldn't navigate to the solutions listed under my particular problem. How do I get there?
Thank you,
Fred

Hi,

If cleaning the lens with a CD cleaner was not corrective, perhaps it may require manually opening the unit, using a can of compressed air and cotton buds to do the internal cleaning. it might also help to lubricate the mechanism especially the slider bar.

Additionally, pls try a reset, this is simply unplugging the unit from the mains for an hour or so. Of coursse all settings would revert back to factory default.

Incidentally, the regional locking might have had a glitch. Pls try to set the region lock to "free" (all regions). This could be done by:

  • With no disc loaded press SETUP
  • With your GoVideo remote, navigate to the lock icon and press "0-0-0-0". A window will appear saying congratulations Player(Loader) Region-free. When you see that window appear,
  • Activate Region free by pressing ENTER.
In some instances, a password may be required. 0000 is the default password to get you in to change the default two letter region code.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Try using a laser cleaning disc in the unit, to help the laser read from DVD discs once again.

Something like this, from Amazon.com. Any office supply store near you will have similar products.

Trying to record to disc from VHS After recirding 8 copies, it now reads "Unknown disc, Please check disc" This is a Go-Video VR3845 Unit.

Hello,

I answered this question previously and the solution remains the same;

how long have you been using the player and has it ever accept blank DVD-R discs in the past.

The problem might be as a result of weak laser (lens) or the blank discs inserted might not be compatible with player.

When the laser(lens) of a player becomes weak, it will not be able to read blank discs. It only takes a very strong laser to read/accept blank discs. If it happens that the laser (lens) is the cause of the problem, then it means you will need to replace the laser (lens) to a brand new one to be able to read blank disc. Though the player might be playing DVD and CD, note that blank disc is stronger when it comes to reading from the laser (lens), it requires sharper laser. I hope you understand this.

So, insert a CD into the player and observe if it will play.If it plays, then its obvious that your laser is very weak.

Concerning the incompatibility issue, I hope you are aware that there are various kinds of empty DVD discs such as DVD +, DVD -, DVD RW. Try any of this empty DVD discs as one of them as to be compatible with this DVD recorder.

Amongst the two topics discussed above, one has to be the cause of the problem. So its up to you to figure out which is the cause of the problem.

I hope you understand the above....

I wish you good luck.

WONT RUN

I bought the VR3845 on a whim, at a local Costco because of the DVD/VHS combo feature and the price. After 7 months the VR3845 suddenly wouldn't read DVD's anymore, even ones I'd recorded the night before. The GoVideo Web site was of no help and I'm now facing wasting hours of my time to get a replacement or my money back, assuming I can.

Other "features", you can only switch recording channels at the minute. That means you record, say 8pm to 9pm on channel 5, but you can't program the unit to record from 9pm to 10pm on a different channel. The programming interface will only let you start the next recording on a new channel at 9:01PM, so you lose the first minute of your program.

At the end of a programmed recording session the VR3845 automatically shuts off. If you're watching another channel while recording, suddenly all you see is static until you power up the VR3845 again.

Sorry Man but this thing just isn't worth it I would take it back.
