Question about Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959K Top Load Washer

Whirlpool Callypso Model #gvw9959kl2 Serial #cm3202070

This washer fills but when it starts to agitate it shuts off and reads CL.
The washer repair place has replaced the water pump, drive motor and motor control board. They are at a loss and I am out several hundred dollars so far. Isn't this probably a mechanical problem like too much resistance in the tub rotation? Thanks, Sherm

The machine lights up but groans to start. flashes letters sometimes CL, or others. then shuts off. does not empty what was left from final load.

Machine was always a lemon. Had to be rebuilt early on. Whirlpool wouldn't just send a new machine. Trying to decide whether to get a new different machine and call it multiple losses.

WASHER STARTS TO FILL, THEN SHUTS OFF AND GIVES DIFFERENT ERRORS. I HAVE TRIED ALL TROUBLE SHOOTING THAT THE OWNERS MANUALS ASKS. THIS IS THE FIRST TROUBLE WE HAVE HAD WITH THIS WASHER.

I had the same problem, it turned out to be the "U-Joint", which was a fairly easy repair. The part comes as a kit, (It is probably very common), the cost I got from Sears was $112. With tax and a $44 overnight delivery charge, my total was $170. And while I had it apart, I also cleaned all the gunk out.

I have a Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959KL2 washer that I've owned for about 5 years with no problems. I do however run an empty load of bleach through it about once a month to try and help keep it clean. After getting the info about the class action suit a couple of years ago, I figured I was just lucky. Well, my luck ran out a couple of days ago when it kept stopping and flashing a code"CL'. I tried unplugging it to reset it and nothing worked. I checked these forums and got some great ideas, but the following one was the best and helped me tremendously, eventually fixing it. The instructions to take the top off were slightly different for my machine, I had to pop off the little "Whirlpool" insignia on the front and remove a screw behind it, and then the top came off, but the rest of the directions where about 80-90% good for my machine, and I was able to get down to the problem. It turned out to be the "U-Joint" under the wash plate. I guess this is a frequent problem because when I started searching for the part, I was told it now comes as a U-Joint "kit". It did have all the parts I needed. The kit was $112. I had to overnight it for $44, (I have 5 kids), and with the tax I think the total charge was $170. While I had it apart, I was able to clean the rest of the tub out. Although this is not a repair that anyone can do, if you're a handy person with a little patience, it wasn't that bad. I just wanted to also thank the poster of the following solution, I couldn't have done it without it. Thanks! Here is the post that helped me:...........

"C1" is known as an Instantaneous Current Limit Error. This will occur when the Motor Controller detects a current spike of 26 amps or greater at the motor windings. Overloading the washer, excessive water and/or excessive suds can cause this problem.
    The manufacturer recommends the following:

    - Wash smaller loads and use the correct detergent (HE only for Calypso machines). NOTE: Make sure the HE detergent is not double or triple concentrated as this will also cause suds problems.
    - Check for objects under the nunate plate. This is the wash plate. Sometimes clothing can get stuck under the plate and cause the motor to bind up. To remove the nunate plate, follow these instructions:

    1. UNPLUG THE WASHER.

    2. Open the washer top. Look along the front seam of the washer where the top meets the front. There are a couple of retaining clips (about 2" in from each side) that you will need to push in on with a putty knife while gently lifting up on the top to get the top to release. Carefully open the top and lay it back against the wall in a resting position. Make sure you support the lid so it doesn't fall open when you tilt the top back.

    3. Remove the tub ring. This is the plastic donut shaped ring that sits on top of the wash tub. There will be a tab on either side of the outer tub near the back that you can use a screwdriver to release the tub ring. The ring is filled with fluid and is used to balance the tub. So, if you hear liquid sloshing around, this is normal.

    4. Remove the center cone from the wash plate. Use a flat blade screwdriver and insert it into any of the slots available along the sides. Gently pry until it pops off. I say "gently", but you may have to use a little muscle to get it to come off. Sometimes they stick. Once the center cone is removed there will be a series of nuts under it.

    5. Remove the nuts and the wash plate should lift out. Be careful not to damage the gasket under it. Clothing can get tangled in the leveler under the wash plate. This leveler should have a key on it. The wash plate will only go back in with this key mating to a slot on it. So, remember how you took it off. In addition, when putting the wash plate back on, make sure you tighten the nuts in a cross pattern and evenly tighten them as you go. This will ensure the gasket seats properly. Don't forget to put the tub ring back in.

    - Check for objects stuck between the inner wash tub and the outer basket. NOTE: It is best to do this with the nunate plate removed. Use a flashlight to peer through the holes in the wash basket to see if anything is catching on the tub.
    - Check the Motor Controller. You will need to determine if there is power getting the the board first and that the fuse on the board is good. If any components on the board are defective, the board has to be replaced. If you have power to the board and the fuse checks good, check for continuity between the Machine Controller and Motor Controller.

There is a tech sheet inside your washer along the interior cabinet (usually the front panel) that explains all these procedures to you. I would advise you to research the tech sheet for exact locations of the pin outs for the circuit boards. Its easier for you to view it rather than me explain it. If you need further assistance, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Not sure if manifold is leaking

Leaks water...check the pump first. The fill valve and hoses may be the next step. See how to take apart info. With the use of plastic drain hoses on many machines today, this has become a common leak trouble maker. The drain hose can rub the wall or a pipe and this will rub a hole in the drain hose.

If the washer fills and drains, but will not agitate or spin, you may have a broken motor coupling. Click on the follwing link for step-by-step instructions on how to replace:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385252-replacing_motor_coupling_whirlpool_top

If you require part assistance, please post back with your model number (located along the washer tub opening) and I can get a part number for you. The repair cost for this item is less than $20 and fairly simple if you read and follow the instructions provided. If you require further assistance, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Agitator not working

There are several things that can cause your machine to fail to agitate. First of all, you need to ask yourself a few of these questions:

1. Does the washer fill normally, initiate agitation cycle and just the agitator is not moving? If so, the transmission and motor coupling are likely good and the agitator has probably worn out the dogs that cause it to grip properly. The agitator dogs will need to be replaced and you shouldn't need a new agitator. (rough estimate = $5.00 to $6.00).

2. Does the washer fill normally, but stops when the agitation cycle is to begin? If so, I would suspect a faulty lid switch. The lid switch will allow the washer to fill, but will not advance the timer beyond that point on some models. (rough estimate = $35.00).

3. Does the washer fill normally and makes a loud grinding noise when the agitation cycle begins? If so, I would suspect your motor coupling is bad and needs replaced. (rough estimate = $18.00 to $20.00).

4. Does the washer fail to fill at all? If so, I would suspect a bad fill valve, pressure switch remaining shut off and/or timer. (rough estimate for fill valve = $35.00, timer = abt $100.00).

These questions are not all inclusive, but these are some of the more common problems I have encountered. If you can provide me with a little more symptom elaboration, I can lead you in the right direction and get a part number and a better price for you. I will need your EXACT model number (located somewhere along the lid opening. Post back with your comments if you need my assistance. A good majority of the problems associated with Whirlpool top loaders can be easily repaired by the average consumer without assitance from a repairman. I hope this information is helpful to you.

Washer Won't Agitate

I would make sure that the washer is properly leveled, and ensure that all sensors that check if the door is closed are working properly.
