Quick question re: Dell pocket DJ 5gb....

Does it charge via USB cord when connected to the computer? or does it absolutely REQUIRE an external charger?

I purchased a refurb Dell Pocket DJ that did not come with an AC charger. I expected it to charge from the USB but now I read that it needs to have at least 25% charge to charge from USB.

When I plug it in to the USB the DELL screen comes up with a Blue background then it switches to a black screen with what looks like a very small battery with a lightening bolt thru it in the upper left corner. That blinks for 5-7 times then it goes away.

I have left it connected to the USB on a powered desktop overnight with no difference. The USB pokes it periodically (I assume that is what is happening) and it goes thru the DELL Screen/battery sequence like I described above.

I have tried some USB AC chargers I have - a Motorola Razor, both AC and car, and a Jabra bluetooth - just to see if they might work and get the same sequence.

My question - is the battery just dead with no hope of recharge or is it that I need to buy a "DELL" AC charger?

I also purchased a refurb Dell Pocket DJ without a charger. After frustration and returning the first one due to lack of charge through USB, I bought a wall charger for it. Works fine.

Here's some additional info...on the back of the unit, there is a switch that locks the controls to prevent unwanted navigation, etc. It is my understanding that if it is in a "locked" position, it will not charge. Unlock it and then try to charge it and see if that works.

Also, there are a number of chargers that will work with this unit...I found one for under $ another one for $7 on sale. As long as the charger has an output of at least 5v, it should work.

Can you copy books on tape to the Dell DJ to listen? Do you save to music; when I tried it said file to data but then I do not see the CD 1 on the DJ.

I also purchased a refurb Pocket DJ last week. After trying to charge it via USB and returning on unit that did not charge that way, the same unit was the same way. I ended up buying a charger for it, and it works great.

The unit is made by Creative, so a Creative Zen Micro charger works on it. See this for a good deal:

Dell Pocket DJ does not charge using USB Cord

If you find none of this has worked you need to try some other decvie in the same usb port. If it is plugged in and operates correctly, you have narrowed it down to the dj unit. Since the chord has tested good, we should go to the unit itself. Four tiny screws located on the outside of the case need to be removed in order to open it. Carefully remove the hard drive, then the battery.

Now with the cable hooked up to the usb port you will use a meter to check some voltages. Perhaps you have a friend who can help. The batteries should read 3.6 VDC. Measured like that its not a true indication of the state of the batteries, but tell us that the charging circuit is probably working okay.

Put it back together carefully, making sure every connection is properly seated and there is no damage. Try it again, making sure you hold down the button for 3-4 seconds. If you have done all of this, the problem is electronic and at a component level. Suggest you take it or send it to the repair shop dell has.

Dell Dj 5 will not hold a charge

FYI, replacing the battery did not solve the problem of the battery refusing to charge. Instead, I've spent $30 at and since I've opened the battery I can't return it. There must be a software or hardware failure that's preventing the unit from charging the battery.
