Sounds like backlight went out.

This is sometimes caused by loose connection or a bad inverter sending power to the backlight. If you're lucky then resetting the inverter connectors will help. The inverter is usually located in the same panel as the screen, You will need to look in your manual to learn how to disassemble it to access the inverter.

Also, see if the light goes back on if you wiggle the screen part back and forth a few times or shake the laptop a little.

let me know of any further help that you may need.

You may have to replace your inverter if wiggling or shaking did not fix the problem. If you are good with electronics then you could probably do it yourself.

Well, I'm sure if you want to sell the one with problems you could get quite a bit for it from someone who knows how to fix it.

Please feel free to give me some feedback by rating my solution, thanks

Have a Great Day! and good luck on the purchase

I would suggest to open the front bezel and check for proper connections to the ballast circuitry or a broken wire will also cause this failure.

To get access to the circuitry for the backlight you will need to remove the screen frame that is in front to hold the screen in place.

You will find some hidden screws under some small rubber(s) that are used to keep a space between the keyboard and the screws.

Its possible that the backlight is failing.

Try pressing the FN (function key) and the more light button, it most likely has a bright sun on it, possibly the up key.

Might not be the arrow up. Look at your keys there should be light blue icons on the keys look for the one that increases the backlight.

  • Ekse May 19, 2008

also the button which turns off the backlight when the cover is closed might be stuck. see if you can find that button. Its very small and doesnt have any markings on it. Look around the laptop when the screen is closed it touches the switch.

Please check the air vents (inlet and outlet) and clean them up using a canned air, and use an external monitor to test this laptop. If the problem is not solved, then your laptop's GPU/motherboard is dying.

Screen began flashing then went dark

If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LEDflashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faultyinverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow myinstructions to identify the fault and possible fix :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3598095-faulty_laptop_lcd_screen

My screen went dark suddenly, when I try to restart my computer the screen is tinted red before going dark again. The screen is not completely black as there is letter visible underneath.

From what you are describing, it sounds like the inverter board is failing. This board sits under the LCD screen and is responsible for taking the DC voltage from the battery and AC adapter and converting that voltage to high voltage AC power for the backlight lamp that sits inside the lcd screen. Without that high voltage the screen goes dark. Most inverters do not fail right away, there are voltage fall offs etc. Inverters are approx. 15-20 bucks on ebay, for most laptops, they can be changed out simply by removing the bezel around the screen, unplugging the two connectors on the inverter and changing it out. In most cases except Dell, the inverter is just sitting in there and is not held in by screws.

Screen went dark (almost completely)

check your power cord and make sure it's plugged in all the way, and if it is, check your brightness setting.

Usually it's the Fn key + an arrow key. Make sure the brightness is up all the way
