I'M TRYING TO INSTALL XP ON MY Compaq Presario SR1350NX Desktop PC. PICKED UP A NEW WD SATA 200 GB HARD DRIVE TO REPLACE THE MALFUNCTIONING SEAGATE. WD INSTALL DISK AND COMPUTER RECOGNIZES THE NEW HARD DRIVE AS "OTHER DEVICE", FORMATS FINE AND READIES THE HD FOR THE OPERATING SYSTEM. WHEN I TRY TO INSTALL XP, THE HARD DRIVE IS RECOGNIZED OKAY, ASKS IF I WAN'T TO USE THE CURRENT FORMAT FOR THE HARD DRIVE, LOADS THE INITIAL FILES, BUT THEN STOPS WHEN IT STARTS COPYING THE FILES TO THE HARD DRIVE. I PLUGGED IN A PATA DRIVE INTO THE EIDE CABLE AND IT DOES EXACTLY THE SAME THING. WHAT COULD BE GOING ON??????

Removed one of the ram chips but, still wouldn't load windows.
I've tried the hard drive in my dell and it works fine.
Something that is strance is this: When I use WD setup disk, the
WD hard drive is only recognized as "additional storage devise" and not
as Master or Slave on the motherboard. It formats the hard drive
just fine. The bios recognizes the hard drive normally but when
I try to install the OS, it loads the inital files but, then when it
starts to copy the installation files, it stops and gives me the blue
screen of death. I tried loading Win 2000 pro and it does the
same thing but gives me a syntex error on the blue screen. The
computer boots up and runs fine using my copy of Ultimate Boot CD for
Windows. I'm thinking of copying Windows from another Compaq and
try booting that way.

IT'S ALLLLLLIIIIIIIIIIIIIVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEE! Your
recommendation was spot on! I took out the other ram module and
put the first module I had taken out back in and it started loading
Windows just fine. Thank you so much for your help!

Files copy errors during the XP installation process are often an indication of BAD RAM.
If you have dual RAM modules, try install with 1 memory module installed

If you took out one RAM module, and the problem was the same, did you try the other module by itself. Everything you describe, indicates BAD RAM
