New unit ?? the burning smell will go away after 5 min of running you connected it up right. Also check the venting to make sure it is clear

Dryer cord

Your four prong cord has 4 wires. Black,Red,Green and White.
Remove the 3 prong cord from the dryer.
The Black and Red wires go to the outside terminals on the dryer. The White wire goes top the center terminal. The Green wire goes outside the terminal cover to any nearby screw for grounding.

I am in the process of trying to hook up a 3 prong electrical cord to a 4 prong but dont know which colored cords go where? any advice?

Get an qualified person to do it. If you do not have any idea how to do it, you are better off having someone else do it. If you have a 3 prong receptacle, you need a 3 prong pigtail. And if you have a 4 prong receptacle, the dryer needs a 4 prong pigtail. The green is ground, white is neutral, red and black are both hot (L1 and L2). If you put a 4 prong pigtail on, remove the ground strap between the center post and the case. The green ground goes on the case, white neutral in the center, black or red to the left, what's left on the right. You can interchange the red and black but NOT the white or green. If you use a 3 prong pigtail, the center is the neutral (same as white on the 4 prong) and you will need the ground strap between the neutral (center) and the case. The wires do NOT cross over on a 3 prong pigtail.

We have moved and the three prong cord now needs to be four prong

Ok here is how to hook up looking at dryer. Left brass screw is hot put red or black wire on. Center screw silver is neutral put white wire on. Right brass is also hot put the red or black wire on which one you have left. The green you ground to the dryer body or you can put with the white wire.

The reason why you have to hot wires is that it is a 240 volt dryer. Each hot wire caries 120 volts. The hot wires are the red and black. The white is a neutral witch is also a ground

I hope this helps. If you have any questions please ask before you rate.

Good Luck And Thank You for the post

How do i hook up my dryer from a 3 prong to a 4 prong

UNPLUG DRYER FIRST.

Remove old cord from back of dryer. Make note of where white, back and red wire hook to on piece of paper.

New cord has 4 wires. looking at the back of dryer,

RED Wire, should have been tied to terminal screw on right side,

WHITE Wire, should have been tied to center terminal,

BLACK Wire, should have been tied to left terminal,

Remaining wire is GREEN, attach to body ground screw located next to cover plate, screw is generally painted green. IF not attach to unit body.

Wire 3 prong cord

Electric Dryer How To Hook Up Cord pixel_trans.gifFor Three Prong Cords
the Center cord wire goes on the center terminal,
the left on the left ,
and the right on the right.

Note: There should be a ground strap or wire that runs from the center terminal to the dryer case.

For Four Prong Cords
the White cord wire goes in the center,
the Red on the Right,
the Black on the Left.
The green cord wire goes to the case or the external ground screw.

Note: Be sure to disconnect the ground wire or strap that runs from the center terminal to the case. In this Photo (A Whirlpool Dryer) I have ran the wire that runs from the center terminal, the Light Green wire, back to itself rather than cutting it off, just incase I need to put a 3 prong cord back on it some day. The whole purpose of this 3 prong / 4 prong thing is it separates the neutral from the ground. pixel_trans.gif pixel_trans.gif3 Prong Cord Whirlpool Dryer Example terminalblock.jpg 4 Prong Cord Whirlpool Dryer Example 4prongcord_small.jpg

Trying to hook a 3 prong hook up with 4 prong cord how do i do it?

A 3 prong plug is for 240 volt (hot-hot-ground) the 4 prong plug is for 120/240 volt (hot-hot-neutral-ground). If your device requires a 4 prong plug, it is not a good idea to connect it to a 3 prong circuit (you will create a possible lethal electrical condition). If your device requires a 3 prong connection, a 4 prong cord can be used by not connecting the neutral (white wire). If you have any questions, let me know.

Ge dryer hooking up for prong cord

If the house is wired right you should be hooked up right. Sounds like it's not moving air properly. Check that the vent is not crushed behind it and that it flows clear all the way outside.
